the NFL isn't a govt entity it's a private enterprise allowed to create their rules that have nothing to do with the 1st amendment. there is also certainly no law affording potential sponsors the same rights as employees

i don't really see where you're going with the 1st amendment narrative anymore than i can understand why players thinks it guarantees them some protection from an employer

just because i have the money and interest in buying an ad doesn't mean i can't be turned down. if i want to place a "pro-life" ad in Abortion Monthly they have the right to refuse my ad and money....1st amendment can't do shit about it

people are constantly invoking their amendment rights where they aren't suitable...irks the shit out of me

You're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying there's a law against what they're doing or anything like that.

I'm saying they are making a big PR mistake by allowing their players to kneel and their players to speak openly about politics but not allowing an opposing view (patriotism).

This is why they are losing viewers. This type of story turns people off of the NFL. They don't understand this very basic marketing principle.

And I worded my original post badly. Of course the group doesn't have a 1st Amendment Right to place this ad. If that's how it came across, that's not what I was implying.

I think they knew it would be rejected ....and that was the goal. It allows you to play 'victim' and get some outrage going.

possible but they do the same advertisement in other programs for other sporting events so it's not like they were targeting the nfl specifically.

seems like goodell (and, yes, you have to assume he had final say here) would have been much better off just accepting the 30k program ad which will be seen by max 100k people then to create this much bad press which could actually affect viewer ratings and, possibly, the million dollar per minute TV commercials.

you gotta pick your fights in this world and 30 grand just isn't worth it for this smear on the nfl brand. another bad decision by the world's most overpaid CEO. this is akin to mcdonalds going to court and alerting the press if a woman found a rat tail in her chicken nuggets when all she was asking was a 30k settlement.

someone needs to give Roger the wonderlic or, at the very least, enroll him in Risk Analysis 101

Totally agree with everything said here. The decision to deny this add was terrible for multiple reasons.

He is the best example of the Peter Principle I can think of. It is amazing this guy is at the top of a $14 billion dollar enterprise.
