I know its not pro, but the Phil Steele College Annual was at my newsstand yesterday. A LOT of info here. There is a coupon for the NFL preview you mail in that is free.

I would think the Marc Lawrence preview will be out anytime too. That is worth the money also.

Phil Steele has an excellent College preview it helped me tremendously. took Utah most of the season because of his info. Heard his Pro forecast wasn't so good however so I didn't bother mailing in last year.

I LOVE that Phil Steele college preview. Best 7 bucks you can spend. I always send in the NFL thing (Free stuff is free stuff)Plus it does have some good trends and lists the last 5 years logs for the reg season and playoffs.

I like to buy the Sporting News NFL preview. they list the depth charts on each team and early in the year i find that stuff helpful.

Athlons college preview is also pretty good.

You know what book was actually pretty good (althought they have some bullshit stories in there and they tout "SCORE" too much) the Harry Pappas "How I make 200,000 betting football every year". Just some good tips and also a pretty interesting read.

The best thing about the Phil Steele book, if you mail in the coupon for the NFL supplement, is that he doesn't hard-sell his products. Never had his service but I respect the work that he puts into the annual.

The perfect complement to Phil Steeles book is the Blue Ribbon College Football annual. It is not a tout book. It is a book (like a media guide) that a lot of the media uses. It is the most comprehensive book out there, plus it has all the updates for each team from their spring games. Link

dont get the marc lawrence blackbook. his key info can be found in the playbook. his info goes against phil steeles and marc goes against his own books on his radio show.i think steele may be more honorable than marc at least he answers email where marc blows you off if you sound half coherent.the nfl northcoast book is a friggin goldmine! theres systems in there that made me huge money last year.

I actually called up to order the phil steele book (the 1st time i got it a few years ago) and the guy on the phone took the order ...AND THAT WAS IT!!!!!!

I didn't get the "do you want this and that or do you wanna sign up for this and that"

Those systems in the NFL book are pretty good also. solid systems. not like those marc lawrence ones "team A is 12-2 in week 4 after a loss off a bye vs a team that is off a win vs a team coming off a home game"

I had a pretty good feel for games with regard for pointspread going 48-36-1 for a 5 pick per week 17 week contest last year. These picks were made simply by my "feel" for the games. I have a big hole in my statistical analysis however.I lost quite a few games because of not knowing intra-division rivalries, rushing stats against certain teams, coaches vs coaches records etc. the more I try to better myself the more I realize that last year was a fluke and I can't expect the same results for this upcoming season. If I use the same approach this year I'll be lucky to be 50%. I was thinking about Andy Iskoe and his NFL stat book available at Gamblers Bookstore website, if anyone has it what is your recommendation?

sometimes "feel" is better than crunching numbers all week. not always but sometimes. Letdowns, look ahead games, going vs joe public, etc.

just remember favorites are favorites for a reason untill you find reason not to back them. line flaws and knowing the past clearly affects the present and the future. football is far different than any other sport. i love it!

First off, Al O'Donnell's "Point Spread Playbook" is the best stats book out there with the NC Sportsbook following a close second.
Al's book gives you everything you could want over the last 3 years, trends, stats - everything!, The NC book gives you stats for the last 5, 10 and more years, and systems up the whazoo - but make sure you verify the stats as they're not the most reliable - and many of the systems are out of date and also a bit unreliable if taken only at face value.

For up to date stats, I love the "Mr NFL" program - it gives you all of the important stats in every combination - YTD, last 4, home vs away, etc.

For newsletters, I like Kevin O'Neills weekly the best. NC Has a good weekly with their Power Sweep if you're willing to sort through the grist to get to the grain.

For books on Pro football wagering, I recommend the following:
Kevin O'Neill, Strategies for the smart player, and New strategies for a new era.
JR Miller, Beat the Pro football pointspread
Dan Gordon, Beat the Sportsbooks,
Bob McCune - any of his books (although he blathers on and on before getting to the point)
Jim Feist and Kelso Sturgeon, Football Betting
and
Stanford Wong, Sharp Sports Betting.
Each of these books has something valuable to offer.

add to bblight's list:

The Unemotional Football Bettor by Scott Kellen

this and Sharp Sports Betting are probably the most useful for someone more analytically oriented.

hi. I take p. steeles service. Its something like $100.00 a year. Theresa ton of data in the weekly mailing also downloadable. He has underdog picks and 4 star picks which have worked out for me over the years. Theres a lot of stuff hetosses in one free sat college etc. I find him worth while as well as both of his books. In looking thru the collegebook one motes that most teams are 6-5,5-6 i think the book helps and so does his service. regards

BobK - I do remember Steele's service was a great money maker last preseason.

I don't know about the service but the Marc Lawrence Playbook's 3,4,5 star selections were big winners in October and November.

I have recently read J.R Miller's book and have some new insights because of it. Al O'Donnell's book will come next as well as some of the others recommended here. I can never have too much info. With the parity in the NFL I believe picking games with beginner's knowledge is giving my money away.

I JUST PICKED UP THE STATFOX EDGE WORKBOOK ITS OK BUT THE INFO ONLY WILL APPLY TO ABOUT 4 GAMES PER TEAM AS CERTAIN SITUATIONS HAVE TO BE MET FOR IT TO MEAN MUCH.i spent all winter picking the minds of some very influential people in the football world. i think i have enough now to win something every week.god i hope.

Ditto here. I can't see why anyone would really flip a coin with his "when the moon is blue on monday, Vandy is 14-3 on the following sat. since '84 if they are coming off a bye vs. non-SEC teams wearing black panties" logic. Go for Phil Steele's stuff.
