Stanford Steve and The Bear: Week 10 college football picks, bets, nuggets

"Stanford Steve" Coughlin and Chris "The Bear" Fallica cover the college football season as only they can, offering their top picks, betting nuggets and totals worth wagering on.

Records:
The Bear (Last week: 1-5. Season: 16-28)
Stanford Steve (Last week: 4-1. Season: 26-22)

Note: All lines are from Caesars Sportsbook.

The Plays

i
i

LSU Tigers at No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide (-28.5, 66)

Stanford Steve:
Don't you think Nick Saban will have all the clips and articles of people saying that his team doesn't deserve to be ranked No. 2 in the first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings hanging where his players can see as they walk around the facility from now until Saturday? I can see him doing those types of things to try to do anything to keep his team motivated as they come in as four-touchdown favorites. Their offense is relentless, averaging 323 yards through the air and 171 on the ground, and will not stop moving the ball on LSU. Plus, I think the defense plays better in front of their home crowd. We'll take the home team and lay the points.

Pick: Alabama -28.5 (Alabama 51, LSU 20)

i
i

Boston College Eagles vs Virginia Tech Hokies (-3, 47)

Fallica:
First, congrats to anyone who has been fading me. Seriously, it does give me a sense of satisfaction that at least I'm making some people money! But hopefully we get things turned around over the final month of the season. Red Bandanna Friday night dog. Rumblings about the possibility of QB Phil Jurkovec returning. And if he does, the +3s will disappear quickly.
Pick: Boston College +3

Stanford Steve: My man, Scott Van Pelt has a saying. "GPG"... that stands for General Principle Game. This is one of the those. It's the "Red Bandana Game" for the Eagles. Take the home team, plus the points.

Pick: Boston College +3 (Boston College 20, Virginia Tech 13)

i
i

Clemson Tigers (-4, 46.5) at Louisville Cardinals

Stanford Steve:
I think the Tigers found something with their ground game last week, as RBs Will Shipley and Phil Mafah combined to run for 197 yards. I know plenty of people will say, "well, they did it against Florida State"... and my response to that is, "I don't care." I think it travels this week. I'll take the road team and give the points.

Pick: Clemson -4 (Clemson 27, Louisville 20)

Stanford Steve and The Bear: Week 10 college football picks, bets, nuggets (continued)

i
i

No. 19 NC State Wolfpack (-2.5, 56) at Florida State Seminoles

Fallica:
Love how the Noles have bounced back from the 0-4 start to win three of four, and very easily could have beaten Clemson last week. While it's not the Clemson of the past six years, it has to bring confidence to the Noles, who haven't quit on Mike Norvell.

Pick: Florida State +2.5

i
i

USC Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils (-8.5, 60)

Stanford Steve:
The Sun Devils come in off of two-straight losses and the Trojans won last week, but they lost wide receiver Drake London, who I thought was on pace to win the Fred Biletnikoff award, given to the nation's best wide receiver. London was averaging 11 catches and 136 yards receiving per game. I think the Trojans offense struggle against the Sun Devils defense and I think the ASU offense gets right after committing five turnovers last week. Lay the points with the home team.

Pick: Arizona State -8.5 (Arizona State 30, USC 18)

i
i

No. 21 Wisconsin Badgers (-13, 37.5) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Fallica:
Wisconsin has seemingly turned its season around the last two weeks by capitalizing on eight turnovers by Purdue and Iowa. They've run the ball 99 times in that span and thrown just 30 passes for 165 yards. While I don't expect the Rutgers offense to do much, I do expect Greg Schiano to figure out a way to stop the run and force Graham Mertz to make a throw or two. And with that comes a good chance of turnovers and a potential short field for SUNJ.

Pick: Rutgers +13

i
i

No. 13 Auburn Tigers at No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies (-4.5, 49)

Fallica:
Talk of a two-loss Auburn making the CFP could be very short-lived. Road Auburn is much different than Jordan-Hare Auburn. The upset of Alabama completely changed the complexion of the Aggies' season and I think their momentum continues here.

Pick: Texas A&M -4.5

i
i

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Miami Hurricanes (-10, 63.5)

Fallica:
Super impressed with the Canes, who have won consecutive games as greater than a FG underdog. Not sure I want to lay double-digits with them, though.

Pick: Georgia Tech +10

i
i

Penn State Nittany Lions (-10, 55.5) at Maryland Terrapins

Stanford Steve:
Last week, we saw the good from Penn State offense, as they moved the ball consistently thru the air and Sean Clifford threw for 361 yards... and then we saw the bad from the Penn State offense, where they committed three enormous turnovers. I see more good Penn State offense coming this week. Lay the points with the road team.

Pick: Penn State -10 (Penn State 37, Maryland 23)

i
i

Oregon State Beavers (-10.5, 54) at Colorado Buffaloes

Fallica:
The Beavers almost predictably lost road games at Wazzu and Cal, but now get the perfect elixir -- Colorado, which if you take away games against Arizona and Oregon's backups, have scored 7, 0, 13, 14 and 3 points vs. Power 5 teams.

Pick: Oregon State -10.5

i
i

Utah Utes (-7.5, 54) at Stanford Cardinal

Stanford Steve:
The Utes are coming in off an impressive win over UCLA and are in the driver's seat to win the Pac-12 South. Utah is averaging 36 PPG in their last five games, which have all been in conference. Meanwhile, the Cardinal come in losing three games in a row, having averaged just 18 PPG. Stanford QB Tanner McKee was banged up last week too, and there's a chance he doesn't play, and we know what the Cardinal offense looks like when Jack West is under center. Utes have won four of the last five in the series. We'll take the road team and give the points.

Pick: Utah -7.5 (Utah 27, Stanford 13)

Bear bytes

No. 9 Wake Forest Demon Deacons at North Carolina Tar Heels

Wake Forest is the second team 8-0 or better to be an underdog vs. a team which did not have a winning record. In 1993, 9-0 Auburn was a 1.5-point dog at 4-5 Georgia and won 42-28.

Wake Forest is the fourth AP Top 10 team to be an underdog vs. an unranked team this year (other three are 2-1 ATS).

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Miami Hurricanes

In the last 10 years, there have been 13 teams which have won consecutive games as an underdog of greater than a FG and then were a double-digit favorite the following week. Those 13 teams went 3-10 ATS with four outright losses.

The Yellow Jackets have covered three straight vs. the Canes, including last year's win as an 18.5-point dog. The last three meetings have been decided by a combined 14 points.

LSU Tigers at No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide

This is the second-straight year Alabama is a four-TD favorite vs. LSU. Last year, Alabama won 55-17 as a 28.5-point favorite over the Tigers. Consider Alabama was only a 25.5-point favorite vs. Tennessee in its last game.

No. 4 Oregon Ducks at Washington Huskies

Oregon has failed to cover each of its last nine games as a favorite, losing three outright. However the Huskies haven't covered any of their four games vs. teams with winning records this year.

Texas Longhorns at Iowa State Cyclones

This is just the second time Iowa State has been favored over Texas. The other instance was in 2019 when the Cyclones won 23-21 as a seven-point favorite.

No. 3 Michigan State Spartans at Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue has 16 wins vs. AP Top 5 teams as an unranked team. That's the most of any team in history. USC and Illinois are tied for second with 11.

Michigan State is the second AP Top 5 team this year to be favored by a FG or fewer on the road vs. an unranked team. The other was Iowa, which won 51-14 at Maryland on October 1.

Army Black Knights at Air Force Falcons

Underdogs have covered 12 of the last 15 games between academies, winning eight outright.

Missouri Tigers at No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs

At 0-8, Missouri is the only FBS team in the country yet to cover a game. At -38, this is the third-biggest spread in a game between two FBS teams this year (Florida -39 vs. Vanderbilt, Oklahoma -38.5 vs Kansas)

Tulsa Golden Hurricane at No. 6 Cincinnati Bearcats

The Golden Hurricane have covered 10 straight games vs. ranked opponents, including as a 24.5-point dog in Columbus earlier this year. Tulsa is a 22.5-point dog Saturday at Cincinnati.

No. 11 Oklahoma State Cowboys at West Virginia Mountaineers

The Cowboys have covered each of their last six games, which is the second-longest active streak behind Syracuse (7).
