cmon man you can get better at a pawn shop!

Hahahahaha, those Sceptre's are decent. It's literally going to be watched about once a month, just to throw the game on during poker games.

I live alone and this will be my 5th TV in the house. They don't all have to be top of the line.

im not looking for anything great or top of the line by any means. i do need a 55" and a 42" though. apparently the first ones that popped up where the best available. they were like 2500-4000 but they were oled. maybe i dont need oled?

If you don't need top of the line then you don't need oled.

Samsung or LG 4k LED is plenty good enough for your main TV.

OLED is only if you are trying to ball outrageous.

well you certainly can't reliably do this in stores. they can adjust picture quality to make certain units (most heavily stocked, best margins, ones they want to move for next gen models) stand out next to more poorly adjusted neighboring ones. well known practice

get some models in mind and see what the folks at avsforum say about them. they will also have some specific picture quality settings available for each model

while this is true, at least you know the adjusted units can achieve a satisfactory picture quality whereas when you order online, you may not like what you get

I believe Samsung has 4 levels of picture quality, with the highest level seeing a big jump in price and not worth it to most people. I bought the 3rd and my son the second, he paid less but lives our picture.

I also think pricing is controlled by the manufacturer, all the top companies offer the same TV for the same price. If Walmart is offering a 55" Samsung Smart TV for $ 750 less, it's probably a level 1 TV (which is probably still pretty good.

PS: I'm no techie

What do you mean 4 levels?

My 55" Samsung I got for 550 has the best picture I've ever seen outside of OLED's in the store.

Google something like "samsung tv series defined". The focus on their different series numbers, which range from 5 through 9. 5 being the lowest quality.

It's hard for me to cut and paste or link from my phone.

i guess but what i'm saying is that you can review all potential models by some dudes on avsforum that really know their stuff....so you're not buying blindly. i would never trust what best buy is showing. some sets can have a 4k disc playing, others a 1080. some on a great HD tv channel feed, others on ones that aren't great on any set. they're there to sell not to help. the guys at avs are there to help and inform, not to sell. Try asking a best buy kid if a certain tv has an external tuner for OAT channels or what feeds the PIP supports...he'll give you the same answer as your question "what is the source of the picture on this tv?" ,,, errr, i don't know
