Two guys that were upper tier baseball players that probably still would've been great after signing big free agent deals:

Ken Dayley
and
Nick Esasky

Both guys came down with "vertigo" and were out of baseball shortly thereafter.

Chuck Klein was 28 & in his prime when he was traded to the Cubs before the 34' season. No player in baseball history had a better 1st 6yrs than Klein. His BA for those 6 yrs. was .359. In '29 his 1st full season he broke the NL HR record. IN '30 he scored 158 runs to this day a NL record & become the 1st NL players to hit 40 HR's in 2 straight seasons. In his sub par '31 season he led the NL in HR's, RBI's & SLG. PCT. In 32 he won the NL MVP award & in '33 he won the triple crown.
6 Hall of Fame years and he went to the Cubs & never led the league in anything again. His stats became almost pedestrian. He was a flop but took the 30,000 from the Cubs that Phila couldn't pay
