not trying to tell you how to parent, but imo, this is a very bad choice, despite his success.

Redeye-

Just to let you, my father let me start gambling when I was 14 and I have never gotten away from it since. Its not a bad thing because I am winning, but be careful putting the thought of not losing into his mind. Its going to be a damn good lesson when he gets his ass kicked one day, I still remember my first losing day. . . I was heartbroken, I thought I was king and could pick every game and then I got my ass handed to me . . .-$120 which was a lot in those days. My dad taught me the lesson of not picking every game and once I showed him I understood I actually had my own account. I remember I spent all my gambling money on these brand new rims for my car. . .They were so cool back then!!!

MY advice to you. . . If you are going to let the kid gamble make him gamble the right way. You start letting him play 10 games a weekend you are really putting bad ideas in his head and he will get his ass handed to him. Let him pick his favorite game of the day and teach him how to do it the right way. Start him out right if you are going to do it at all.

I'm giving him some rope for now, but am talking to him about this and the inevitable bad week or weeks ahead. He kinda knows that since he knows that it even happens to me, and I would say that I'm very successful at it myself.I was actually surprised that he wanted this many plays for the week since the previous 5 weeks he didn't go over 5 plays for one week. I really can't be a hypacrite about this since I spend alot of time at it myself and he knows that it pays the bills' Like I said this KId doesn't have any issues , good grades, wants to go to college, and he's under my supervision with this. And he has his own money, or I should say the house money. $400 + in 6 weeks. Plus he is staying in the $20 range except for his $50 lock on the Colts-7 over the Bears 2 weeks ago

growing up, we had a picking contest for the entire nfl season among thr family: me, dad and my bro and sis (3 years younger than me). we started when i was around 13-14 years old so we are talking late 1970s. the winner got $1 from each of the other 3. i know the money isn't "pay the rent" kind of stuff but that $3 meant A LOT to us - mostly because of the bragging rights that went with it.

let the kid gamble at 16. hell, i'd put it at 60/40 the kid's drinking alcohol in the house and no doubt has seen his fair share of Playboy's in his life, too. if he hasn't he'd be about the only 16-year-old boy not to have done so.

RedEye, Though I have major reservations on anyone encouraging a kid into a life of gambling, I can't be a hypocrite, as I began at 14, and come from a family of quite a few Pros & BMs, then spent ten years with a working piece of a betting office, during and after college.

In today's world of gaming proliferation, many parents are in denial, if they think that their kid isn't going to be in card games, casinos, or having sports action by the time he enters college, so I agree with you mentoring him..get his action-jackson in check, then again at only $20 per game may be the best way to learn.

In my first fall of betting the NFL, I not only won small for the fall(playing only my top 2 or 3 each Sat/Sun), but also was one of only about 5 that picked Oakland over Philly in SB-XV, with a score of 24-10(missing the 27-10 final by an FG), and bringing home a SB Party pot of $500.

Earned my allowance as a teen, by keeping my father's pitcher's baseball log books up-to-date, making game lines each day/week by using different power-rating numbers, reading and condensing down newspaper articles, making schedule blowups at copy shops, making square-up payments and pickups,etc..

We all have to take our lumps, his learning curve has begun.

When I was bookmaking, I remember a 16 year old coming in every time he got hold of a few quid. He couldnt see past a favourite and when he did win, he just put more on the next loser. He was so bad with figures, he used to ask the till-hand how much he would win if he put x amount on at a certain price. I remember saying to a worker, there goes another no-hoper in life. I had not seen him for 2 years when he pulled up outside the shop in a Porche, sporting a Saville Row suit and proceeded to have 2 £500 losing bets, which seemed to be water of a ducks back to him. His apparent new wealth had come about, he told me, by becoming a dealer on the London Stock Exchange. I could believe he had become a dealer but not on the LSE and trying to keep a straight face offered him a telephone account. Over the next 2 years, the money kept rolling in and I could not believe that he hadnt been caught. Then one day I was talking to an aquaintance who worked in the LSE and happened to mention his name. To my surprise, he said the kid was the top dealer for one of the investment banks in London. From that day on, I have never tried to guess what a kids future will be. Like gambling, there is an awful amount of luck involved.

REDEYE....Be happy when you see him graduate college....dont start him thinking winning money picking football games is easy....i'd rather see you have him start taking action from all the kids at his high school!!...i'm sure he'd end up making more money!!..PS..tell him to use DONBEST for lines..not those you posted.
college? This kid could have a real future lol.

Nothing wrong with what he's doing as long as it's supervised. A losing week will probably be a good thing for him and make him chose more cautiously. I'm sure this creates a nice bond between you two as well.
