You do not want to live there!!! I swear !
Do not think of taking your car there either !
Take the train to work everyday !
Some Portugese and Spanish rest.there, and the airport of course, but that will be IT !

If you are going to have a car don't even think about moving into Newark. The portugese are beautifying the city with new homes they're constructing in every abandoned lot imaginable but the only decent parts of Newark remain Ironbound, which is an industrial section of the town and the tree lined section of North Newark. 20 minutes away you can reside anywhere in Union County. I suggest Union, Maplewood and even the more ritzy Short Hills. These towns have no bad sections whereas Hillside and South Orange you have to still be careful. Definitely stay away from Irvington, Orange and East Orange. These towns ARE worse than Newark, especially East Orange. Kearny, Harrison, Bayonne, Elizabeth, Union City - these are all industrial towns and pretty unimpressive. You can still get a nice apartment/condo for around $1000 or less. So much cheaper than Manhattan. Hoboken and Jersey City you can forget about. Both are just as expensive now as Manhattan and Jersey City - if you ever look at it from the Manhattan side -is starting to look like another New York City. Also look for anything along a stretch of Route 78 West. Very nice and quiet going out west and you just jump on that highway and are in Newark in no time.

Do not even consider living in Newark though. I worked there for just over 5 years. We averaged about three tragedies a month (murders, family member murders, employees in prison, employees shot, homes robbed, etc..).

Lots of listings on www.nj.com.

If you live in northwest NJ you may run into a bit of snow. In the cities and near the shore it usually only snows a few times a year, if that. This year was unusual in the amount of snow that fell. I guess the answer is that a car will be OK for about 360 days of the year but the other 5 or so you may wish you had a 4 wheel drive. But if occasional snow worries you then a big car like a Crown Vic plows right through it.

I'm in Jersey and there is no way you want to be anywhere close to Newark or the city. It's unbelievably pricey and dirty as hell in my opinion. Plus the traffic sucks big time. Look in Summit or New Providence areas you can get abeautiful condo their and only be 15 minutes from Newark. If you want to be 30 to 35 minutes away check out the beautiful condos in Bedminster, Bridgewater, or even Parsippany. They are less expensive and the scenery is much more nice.

Red - I live in , and LOVE New Jersey but... for God's sake - don't even think about living in Newark. I don't know what you're looking to spend but you'd probably be much happier just about anywhere else. The Monmouth County suggestion s good but if you want to be closer try Morris County. Plenty of apartments in Parsippany, Rockaway, Morristown. Cheaper and quieter than Hoboken/Jersey City. Train is an option, from Morristown anyway or a 30 min. or less drive if you'll have a car. If you have any more specific questions, post them and I'll be happy to help. Nickfromnj

About a 4WD - it's not a necessity but you'll definatly appreciate it the handful of days each winter that driving is unbearable.

Me fail English ? Thats unpossible !

Hey,
I grew up in North Bergen, hung out in Jersey City. Your best bet would be Carteret, Woodbridge area. Only 2 minutes from Newark buddy! Area is nice and you can go outside at night .

thanks for all the help guys.
i'm in NJ now and have looked at apts in south orange, montclair, and jersey city.
there is a nice apt complex in south orange, Gaslight Commons. I'll either get that or something in Jersey City for about the same price. Jersey City has better views, but the apt comlex is nicer in South Orange. Less crowded in South Orange.

You guys were dead on about some of the cities around here which look crime laden.
