But MM, Gasol winning defensive player of year was as big a joke as Tyson Chandler winning it the year before.
The only reason either won it is because the NBA didn't feel right awarding it to Dwight Howard 4 & 5 years in a row...
The year Dwight was on the Lakers coming off back surgery? Gasol clearly deserved to win it that year. I'd take Dwight on Orlando over Gasol but I'd take Gasol right now over him unless Dwight can get back to that level. Memphis dRTG and pts allowed per 100 are so much better with him on the court.
Did you know last year Houston's dRTG and pts per 100 were actually better when Asik was on the court than Dwight? Not saying Asik is better but that would never happen with Gasol. He is a fundamental defensive wizard. Probably my favorite player to watch on D because like I said IT'S A FAT WHITE GUY just dominating NBA players defensively. Every other elite NBA defensive C you can think of was an athletic beast.
Also even though he won DPOY once he is still underrated. Nobody considers him a top 10-15 player but he is the best player on a perennial 50 win team, does Memphis look that talented to y'all? They started Tayshaun Prince and Tony Allen on the wings for the better part of the last 2 years. We got guys in this thread that could bring more outside shooting than them

As far as Mark Gasol goes, let's just say he probably has more heart than athletic ability.
But in some cases that means a lot.
Not to mention it's slim-pickens these days when it comes to elite NBA defenders...

I'll rattle off some guys I think are overrated....
Rondo (Hate to do this to him but he hasn't stayed healthy in 2 years, still can't shoot and someone is about to give him 90-100mm in 6 months)
Parsons (Can't guard anyone, Rockets played way more freeflowing than the Mavs will, wouldn't be surprised if he struggled more...Also seems like a huge douche)
David Lee (Just awful defensively, I think Kerr will play Draymond Green over him a lot this year)
Damian Lillard (This 1 will draw some raised eyebrows. He is clutch, fun to watch and always a threat to drop 30 but his playmaking ability for a PG is pretty bad and he just isn't talented enough on D to stop anyone. SG in a PG body, guys like this tend to get overrated.)

Yeah I dunno...Underrated/Overrated is a subjective thing because there is no uniform rating system we're going by. A guy could be underrated in some circles and overrated in others. It isn't like the stock market where the perceived value of every entity is right there for you in #s form.
I do think Parsons will struggle some in Dallas, maybe not in the regular season but in the postseason I just don't like all the subpar defenders they're putting on the floor. Carlisle is a great coach but he'll have his work cutout for him.
