Bonus Play Monday

Daily Bonus Plays rallied nicely the last handful of days. We won’t know the result of this one for some time, but I would suggest that it’s not the worst idea to take it now, which I’ve done myself.

175 SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI at 176 KENTUCKY

Take: SOUTHERN MISS +7

I’m usually a little hesitant to back new head coaches out of the gate, but I think there’s enough in play here to support a play on Southern Mississippi. Jay Hopson has done well at the FCS level, and he was formerly an assistant here at Southern Miss. I also like the fact that the new OC is Shannon Dawson, who had that job at Kentucky last season. He got fired, so there’s two ways to read the situation. One is that he wasn’t any good, the other is that he didn’t have the personnel. But one thing for sure is that you know Dawson is going to be all-in to do some damage to the program that dumped him. That’s a nice intangible. USM has the best QB in CUSA in Nick Mullens, and while the offense did lose a few important pieces, I expect the Golden Eagles to still be very productive on offense. We’ll see on the defense. I don’t think it’s necessarily down from last year, but it probably isn’t any better either.

Kentucky is already having some problems. The Wildcats are already down two projected defensive starters. For a team that lost seven of its eight leading tacklers from 2015, this is a potentially big hit. I think the Wildcats could have an improved offense. Eddie Gran is the new OC and he did some great work at Cincinnati. Drew Barker was unimpressive in two starts last season, but he was a pretty highly recruited QB and I suspect he’ll do a better job this season. The strength of the Kentucky team will be its running game, especially with what is a very experienced OL to open holes.

This game looks like a tossup to me. I have these two teams very close in all three sets of power ratings I utilize. It’s an important game for both teams. Southern Miss is an upwardly mobile program that would love to knock off an SEC opponent on the road. Kentucky hasn’t been to even a minor bowl since 2010, and if Mark Stoops wants to stay off the hot seat, he needs an invite this season. That makes this almost a must win Week One game for the Wildcats. But I don’t see them being a full TD better than the Golden Eagles, and with the early attrition on defense, I see the visitors having a legit shot here. I’ll take the touchdown with Southern Mississippi.

(901) MIAMI MARLINS VS (902) CINCINNATI REDS

Take: UNDER

Reason: The Marlins might be a longshot to win their division, but they are right in the thick of things in the Wild Card race. Miami is tied with the Cardinals for the 2nd NL Wild Card spot right now, one game ahead of Pittsburgh and two games ahead of the Mets. The Marlins snapped a two game losing streak on Sunday, taking the final game of their series with the White Sox, 5-4. David Phelps makes a rare start today for the fish. Phelps has been in 52 games this season, but started just two times. Phelps has been solid out of the pen, posting a 2.40 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. Phelps two starts have been very good, allowing just one run over 9.1 innings. Brandon Finnegan starts for the Reds. Finnegan is 7-8 with a 4.45 ERA, but has three straight quality starts. Finnegan has allowed just three runs over his last 18 innings and has won four of his last five decisions. Miami has gone UNDER in four of the last five starts by Phelps on the road. In addition, seven of the last 10 meetings between these clubs have gone UNDER. I'm sticking with the UNDER here tonight.

Bonus Play Draw +213

I like the Draw between Nimes and Lens on Monday. This soccer match takes place in France at 2:30pm. The total is set at 2 so they are expecting a low score.

A's vs Rangers

1* Bonus Play Texas Rangers

Setting the scene: Veteran Ross Detwiler was impressive in his first MLB start of 2016, but we think he’s in store for some regression tonight. Martin Perez has been inconsistent this year, but has done well in this spot. For a number of different reasons, we think the home side is worth the price of admission tonight.

Detwiler: He’s 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA. Detwiler was horrible in Triple-A and in seven relief appearances for the Indians, but turned it around vs. the Orioles on Wednesday, throwing eight shutout innings. After that gem, we feel that there’s only one way the overachieving Detwiler’s performance can go.

Perez: He’s 7-8 with a 4.22 ERA. Perez comes in with some momentum after holding Colorado to a single run off four hits over 5.2 innings in Wednesday. Perez is just 1-7 with a 6.00 ERA on the road this year, but a near-perfect 6-1 with a 2.47 ERA in front of the home town crowd.

The bottom line: Perez has proven himself at home all season, while the book is clearly still out on Detwiler. If you don’t mind laying chalk, consider a second look at the Rangers in this one.

Marlins vs Reds

Play - Miami Marlins w/Phelps

Edges - Marlins: David Phelps 3-0 away career team starts during August. Reds: Brandon Finnegan 6.11 ERA with 1.61 WHIP last 7 overall starts, and 7-13 team starts as a dog this season. With that look for the Marlins to make it 6 straight wins in this series here tonight. We recommend a 1* play on Miami. Thank you and good luck as always.

MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Marlins malaise

The Marlins learned Sunday they’ll be without star slugger Giancarlo Stanton for the rest of the season with a groin injury.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including the Miami Marlins who received some really bad news in their chase for a National League wildcard spot.

Minnesota Massacre

An incredible offensive display in July by the Minnesota Twins has given way to repeated pitching meltdowns as we reach the middle of August. The Twins dropped an 11-4 decision to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday for their fifth loss in the past six games; they’ve surrendered a whopping 53 runs over that stretch, the main contributor to their 5-1 O/U mark in that span. The Twins are easily the top over team in baseball (72-40-6) heading into a six-game road swing against hosts Atlanta and Kansas City.

Breaking Even

Speaking of the Royals, they’re back to being the closest break-even bet in baseball following Sunday’s one-sided win over Minnesota. The defending World Series champions are a +2 in units won through 117 games, slightly ahead of the San Diego Padres (+6). Kansas City has been one of the safest bets at home (36-21), but has been positively abysmal away from Kauffman Stadium (21-39). The Royals will look to improve that wretched road mark as they open a three-game set Tuesday in Detroit.

Marlins Malaise

The Miami Marlins face an uphill climb in their quest to reach the National League postseason. The Marlins learned Sunday they’ll be without star slugger Giancarlo Stanton for the rest of the season with a groin injury. Miami enters this week’s action a whopping 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Washington Nationals, and in a multi-team battle for the second NL wild-card spot. But take heed, Marlins fans: Miami is 5-3 SU and +231 units in eight games with Stanton out of the lineup.

Batting Stats

* We’ve said before that Jose Altuve is pivotal to the Houston Astros’ success, and he proved it again Sunday - going 0-for-4 in a 9-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Astros fell to 7-19 SU and 8-17-1 O/U when Altuve - the runaway American League batting leader - fails to record a hit.

* Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds continues to be one of the most torrid hitters in the second half, adding a pair of hits in four at-bats Sunday to boost his post-All-Star-break average to .463. The Reds are an impressive 16-11 SU and 12-12-3 O/U over that stretch.

Pitching Stats

* Bet against Danny Duffy at your peril. The Royals left-hander opens the week fourth in baseball in units won ($1,172) and is on an impressive stretch in which Kansas City has won each of his last nine starts. He has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of those nine outings.

* Fans at Camden Yards will be treated to quite the showdown Wednesday when Boston Red Sox lefty David Price takes on Orioles ace Chris Tillman. Price has been one of the worst value pitchers in baseball this season (-$941) while Tillman comes in leading the majors in units won ($1,553).

Totals Trend

The Toronto Blue Jays have been an Under bettor’s dream so far this season, going 18-35-3 O/U away from the hitter-friendly confines of Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays embark on a pivotal six-game road trip beginning Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
