MLB | Blue Jays vs A's
Play on: A's -113 at 5Dimes

Jack's Free Pick Monday: Oakland A's -113

The Toronto Blue Jays are in a tough spot here. They just completed a four-game series against the rival New York Yankees at home, and now they have to travel across the country for a series against the Oakland A's on Monday.

I'll gladly back Oakland's Sean Manaea in Game 1. He has gone 4-3 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.035 WHIP in nine starts this season, 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA and 1.136 WHIP in four home starts, and 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA and 0.737 WHIP in his last three outings.

J.A. Happ has an aberration-type season last year where he was great for really the first time in his career. But he is coming off an injury and hasn't been effective in 2017 thus far. Happ is 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in four starts this season.

The Blue Jays are 2-9 in their last 11 games vs. a left-handed starter. The A's are 6-1 in their last seven home games vs. a left-handed starter. Oakland is 7-3 in its last 10 home meetings with Toronto. Bet the A's Monday.

Preview: Cardinals at Reds

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (26-28) at Cincinnati Reds (25-30)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals have had their problems on the road since sweeping a three-game series at Miami in early May but hope to change their fortunes when they begin a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. St. Louis has lost six of its last seven contests away from home, including the first three of its seven-game road trip.

The Cardinals were unable to avoid being swept by the Chicago Cubs on Sunday as they dropped a 7-6 decision despite a three-run homer by Stephen Piscotty, who halted a 25-game drought after going deep in two of three contests from April 12-15. While St. Louis looks to end a four-game road slide, Cincinnati aims to avoid a three-game skid at home. The Reds began its seven-game homestand by edging Atlanta but lost the three-game series by falling 13-8 in Sunday's rubber match. Zack Cozart recorded his second two-homer performance in five contests and tied his career high with five RBIs, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Reds from losing for the fourth time in their last six at Great American Ball Park.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (4-4, 3.08 ERA) vs. Reds RH Asher Wojciechowski (1-0, 5.63)

Martinez is coming off his seventh consecutive quality start, a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in which he allowed one run and four hits over eight innings while recording nine strikeouts for the second straight outing. The 25-year-old Dominican has given up more than three runs in only two of his 11 turns this year but has not produced a walk-free effort since his season debut against the Chicago Cubs on April 2. Martinez fell to 5-2 in 17 career appearances (six starts) against Cincinnati on April 9, when he was tagged for six runs - five earned - over five frames.

Wojciechowski made his first major-league start since 2015 with Houston on Tuesday and escaped with a no-decision after yielding four runs and four hits - three homers - over four innings at Toronto. The 28-year-old native of South Carolina began his first season with Cincinnati by making a pair of relief appearances over which he gave up two runs - one earned - and three hits in four frames. Wojciechowski, who never has faced St. Louis, has issued just one walk over eight innings this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cozart enters the series opener having reached base safely in a career-best 26 consecutive games.

2. The Cardinals optioned OF Magneuris Sierra to Triple-A Memphis to make room for 3B Jedd Gyorko, who returned to the lineup Sunday after being on paternity leave for two contests and went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

3. Cincinnati took two of three at St. Louis from April 7-9, posting a pair of shutouts, before splitting weather-abbreviated two-game set at Busch Stadium at the end that month.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (19-35) at Atlanta Braves (24-30)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 7:35 PM EST
WHERE: SunTrust Park, Cumberland, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Losing Freddie Freeman figured to devastate the Atlanta Braves, but the acquisition of Matt Adams and a strong offense have kept the team afloat entering its four-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies, which begins Monday. Obtained in a May 20 trade with St. Louis, Adams hit his fifth homer in 13 games with the club as the Braves wrapped up a 4-5 road trip with Sunday’s 13-8 victory at Cincinnati.

Adams, who had been limited to pinch-hitting duties before the deal, has delivered 15 hits for the Braves - 10 for extra bases (four doubles, one triple) - while Ender Inciarte recorded his second five-hit performance in 13 days to raise his average to .299. Philadelphia completed just its fifth series win of the season with Sunday's 9-7 triumph over San Francisco, which raised its record to 7-26 over its last 33 games. Odubel Herrera hit .104 during a rough 13-game stretch in late May but rebounded with two hits Saturday and three - along with three RBIs and two runs scored - on Sunday. The Phillies outscored Atlanta 13-8 while sweeping a three-game home series in April.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (0-2, 5.12 ERA) vs. Braves RH Bartolo Colon (2-6, 6.99)

Philadelphia recalled Pivetta from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make the fifth start of the season. The rookie lost his first two turns, falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 30 and Washington five days later, but has not allowed more than four earned runs in any of his outings. In his last start before heading back to the minors, the 24-year-old held Texas to one run and three hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings on May 18.

The 44-year-old Colon has been unable to recapture the magic of his last three seasons with the Mets, giving up six or more runs five times in 11 starts. He surrendered nine - only two were earned due to a disastrous defensive performance in the third inning - in losing for the fifth time in six decisions Tuesday against the host Los Angeles Angels, and the league is hitting .325 versus baseball’s oldest active player. Colon allowed four runs and 11 hits over seven frames in a loss at Philadelphia on April 21.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Phillies’ series victory over the Giants was their first since sweeping a two-game set against Miami from April 26-27.

2. Atlanta INF/OF Danny Santana went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored on Sunday after entering with nine hits in 60 at-bats on the season.

3. Herrera leads all center fielders in doubles (16), hitting two in each of his last two games.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (23-35) at Milwaukee Brewers (30-27)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 7:40 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Eric Thames made a big return to the lineup for the Milwaukee Brewers and will try to get hot again as the club continues a homestand with the first of four games against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Mired in a 4-for-33 slump and with just one home run since May 9, Thames was out of the starting lineup in Saturday's loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he slugged his 15th homer to help the Brewers salvage the finale of the three-game set 3-0.

Domingo Santana also went deep for Milwaukee and has four homers in his last seven contests. The Giants activated outfielder Hunter Pence from the disabled list, but he was not in the starting lineup in Sunday's 9-7 loss at Philadelphia. Home runs from Eduardo Nunez and Brandon Crawford, the first two for San Francisco after a stretch of six straight games without a long ball, were not enough as it fell for the ninth time in 12 games. Veteran Jeff Samardzija has pitched better than his 1-7 record would indicate, and he will get the nod in the opener opposite Junior Guerra for Milwaukee.

TV: 7:40 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (1-7, 4.63 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Junior Guerra (1-0, 1.84)

Samardzija is coming off his shortest start of the season, a four-inning effort Tuesday in which he allowed three runs and nine hits while striking out five against Washington. He finished May at 1-3 but had a 3.32 ERA in six starts while striking out 49 and walking only one. The 32-year-old is 0-3 with a 6.15 ERA in 14 career games (seven starts) at Miller Park.

Guerra improved to 10-3 in his career with six scoreless innings at the New York Mets on Wednesday. He has yielded eight hits in 14 2/3 innings on the season and opponents are hitting .206 against the Venezuela native since the beginning of last year. The 32-year-old, who has never faced the Giants, is 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA in 11 career starts at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee has held its opponent to two runs or fewer in four of the past five games.

2. Crawford has 10 RBIs over a six-game stretch.

3. INF Eric Sogard added an RBI single Saturday and the Brewers are 7-0 with him batting leadoff.

GAME: Miami Marlins (24-31) at Chicago Cubs (28-27)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago Cubs hope to look back on this week as the point they turned their season around. The defending World Series champion Cubs look to match their season high with a fourth consecutive victory when they host the Miami Marlins for the opener of a three-game series Monday.

Chicago has failed to live up to expectations during its title defense and had slipped two games below .500 after going 0-6 on a West Coast trip last week. The Cubs’ fortunes looked up over the weekend, though, as they swept rival St. Louis in a three-game set to pull within a game of first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central. The Marlins have won three straight and seven of their last eight, but they haven’t won a series on the road since taking two of three at San Diego from April 21-23. Miami was swept in a three-game series in its last trip to Wrigley Field last August, as the Cubs took down the Marlins on the front end of an 11-game winning streak.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Dan Straily (4-3, 3.56 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Eddie Butler (2-1, 4.42)

Straily has been the Marlins’ most consistent starter, and he’s won his last three starts. The 28-year-old struck out 10 in a win over Philadelphia last time out, allowing two runs (one earned) in 6 2/3 innings. Straily, who briefly pitched for the Cubs in 2014, is 1-1 with a 6.11 ERA in four games (three starts) against his former team.

Butler has struggled to find consistency in four starts since being called up. The 26-year-old was tagged for six runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss at San Diego last time out - the first time he has allowed more than two runs but the third straight start he failed to pitch past the fifth inning. Butler is 0-2 with a 12.46 ERA in two games (one start) against the Marlins.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs 3B Kris Bryant is 4-for-7 with a double and two home runs against Straily, while OF Jason Heyward is 4-for-8 versus the right-hander.

2. Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton is 10-for-23 with three homers during a seven-game hitting streak.

3. Chicago rookie OF Ian Happ hit a pair of home runs in Sunday’s 7-6 win over St. Louis, and 10 of his 16 major-league hits have been for extra bases.

GAME: Houston Astros (41-16) at Kansas City Royals (24-31)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Houston Astros needed only 57 games this season to do something they never had done in their 55-year history - establish a division lead greater than 13 games. Already off to the best start in club history and sitting on the largest division lead in the majors, the Astros take aim at another team record Monday as they seek an 11th straight road victory when they begin a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals.

Houston (41-16) cruised to its 10th straight win - both away from home and overall - as it defeated host Texas 7-2 to build a 13 1/2-game advantage in the American League West, which is one-half game better than the lead it held for a day in 1998, and tie the club mark for most consecutive road wins set in 1989. "I love the makeup of this team, the resolve to come in and play against teams no matter where we are, no matter who we're playing. We've got a pretty good vibe going," manager A.J. Hinch told MLB.com following Sunday's victory. Kansas City fell to 3-3 during its 10-game homestand with an 8-0 setback against Cleveland on Sunday, failing to complete a three-game sweep against the Indians for the second time in as many weekends. The Royals are one of only two teams to win a series versus the Astros this season, taking two of three in Houston from April 6-8.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Mike Fiers (2-2, 4.96 ERA) vs. Royals RH Ian Kennedy (0-5, 5.12)

Fiers made his case to remain in the rotation by allowing two runs and fanning eight in six frames during a win at Minnesota on Tuesday. The Astros previously had announced the 31-year-old would be moving to the bullpen after producing only one quality start over his previous eight outings before injuries to Charlie Morton and Joe Musgrove forced the club's hand. Fiers' only other quality start came in a loss to the Royals on April 7 in which he yielded two runs - one earned - over five innings.

Kennedy saw his winless streak reach 13 starts with Thursday's home loss to Detroit in which he was tagged for five runs on four hits and three walks over three innings. The USC product surrendered a homer for the sixth straight outing and went 0-3 with an 11.30 ERA over four turns in May after going 0-2 with a 2.30 mark in five trips to the mound in April. Carlos Beltran (6-for-24) and Brian McCann (6-for-22) both have homered twice against Kennedy, who has posted a 1.01 ERA while winning each of his four career starts versus the Astros.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Astros are 25 games over .500 for the first time since they were 91-66 on Oct. 2, 2001.

2. Royals 2B Whit Merrifield is in the midst of a career-best 19-game hitting streak while 1B Eric Hosmer has reached base in 36 straight home contests - the longest stretch since Beltran matched the club record of 44 straight from 2001-02.

3. Houston is 8-8 against the AL Central and 33-8 versus the rest of the majors.

Preview: Blue Jays at Athletics

GAME: Toronto Blue Jays (28-29) at Oakland Athletics (24-32)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Josh Donaldson has found his home run stroke and looks to keep the Toronto Blue Jays' surge going when they open a three-game series at the Oakland Athletics on Monday. Donaldson, who came off the disabled list late last month, has slugged four homers in a span of five games, the latest a go-ahead shot in the eighth inning of Sunday's 3-2 win over the New York Yankees.

The victory gave the Blue Jays a split of the four-game set and left them 10-3 over their last 13 contests. They will attempt to get to .500 for the first time this year while taking on improving Oakland southpaw Sean Manaea, who has allowed a run in 14 innings over his last two starts. If he can continue that run, it will be a dramatic departure for the Athletics, who lost 11-10 to Washington on Sunday and have allowed an average of 10.3 runs in their last four losses. Oakland's rally in the ninth inning fell short, but Matt Joyce smacked a grand slam to make it interesting and has homered twice in his last three games.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, SportsNet (Toronto), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (0-3, 4.50 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (4-3, 3.91)

One of baseball's three 20-game winners a year ago, Happ is still seeking his first victory in 2017 after a no-decision against Cincinnati on Tuesday. He allowed two runs in four innings in his return from a 1 1/2-month disabled list stint and has failed to get through five frames in three consecutive starts. The 34-year-old is 4-0 with a 3.17 ERA in nine career games (seven starts) versus Oakland.

Manaea retired the first 10 men he faced while dominating Cleveland on Wednesday, finishing with nine strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits in seven innings. He is 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA over his last seven starts and has allowed five hits or fewer in all nine outings on the year. The former first-round pick allowed two runs on three hits in five innings in his one prior start against Toronto, which came last year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto 1B Justin Smoak also homered Sunday and has equaled his 2016 total (14) in 70 fewer games.

2. A's OF Mark Canha (illness) was scratched from Sunday's lineup.

3. Blue Jays DH Kendrys Morales has five multi-hit games in his last 10 overall.

Preview: Nationals at Dodgers

GAME: Washington Nationals (35-20) at Los Angeles Dodgers (35-23)
DATE/TIME: Monday, June 05 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

After beating up on a pair of last-place teams on the first two stops of their three-city road trip, the Washington Nationals have a chance to prove why they own the best record in the National League. The Nationals attempt to exact a small measure of revenge against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season when they begin the final leg of their nine-game West Coast trek Monday with the first of three contests against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Washington opened its journey through California early last week with a three-game sweep of San Francisco and scored 28 runs over the weekend while taking two of three from Oakland. Bryce Harper drew three walks and scored twice in his return from a three-game suspension in Sunday's 11-10 victory, while Ryan Zimmerman continued his unlikely Triple Crown bid by going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, lifting his season numbers to an MLB-best .374 average, 16 homers (tied for first in the NL) and an MLB-high 48 RBIs. The Dodgers are tied with Arizona for the best home record in the majors (21-8) and - like the Nationals - have won eight of their last 11 overall, although they mustered only three hits Sunday at Milwaukee as they were unable to complete a three-game road sweep. Los Angeles won five of its regular-season meetings with Washington a year ago and rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the NL Division Series to eliminate the Nationals.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, MASN (Washington), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (4-1, 3.03 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-5, 3.91)

Gonzalez continued to struggle with his control in a win at San Francisco on Tuesday, permitting three runs on eight hits and three walks over 6 1/3 innings. The two-time All-Star, who last pitched in Dodger Stadium in Game 3 of the 2016 NLDS, is tied with Colorado's Tyler Chatwood for the major-league lead with 35 free passes issued. Adrian Gonzalez (2-for-17) and Yasiel Puig (1-for-11) have struggled against Gonzalez, who is 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA in five career regular-season starts versus the Dodgers.

Ryu capped a strong finish to May with a no-decision at St. Louis on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while throwing 77 pitches over six frames. The 30-year-old South Korean picked up his first career save six days earlier with four scoreless innings and earned his last victory on May 18, when he gave up two runs over 5 1/3 frames against Miami. Ryu is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in four home appearances (three starts) this year as he enters his first career start versus Washington.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Dodgers (plus-84) and Nationals (plus-70) own the largest run differentials in the NL.

2. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy is 14-for-28 with a homer, seven RBIs and five runs scored during the road trip.

3. Los Angeles RHP Kenley Jansen has struck out 40 of the 85 batters he has faced and already owns the major-league record for the most strikeouts to begin a season without issuing a walk.
