Top 25 roundup: Krzyzewski gets 1,000th win
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

NEW YORK -- Coach K reached 1K.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski became the first Division 1 coach to win 1,000 games, guiding the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils to a 77-68 win over the St. John's Red Storm on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

"We were so gritty in the last 10 minutes," Krzyzewski said. "It was tough to get involved with 1,000. I was just trying to survive this game, which is how you get to 1,000."

In addition to the record number of wins, Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils (17-2) to four national championships, 13 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and 11 Final Fours. He also coached the U.S. Olympic Team to two gold medals.

Freshman guard Tyus Jones led the Blue Devils with 22 points and six assists. Center Jahlil Okafor, the nation's top-scoring freshman, added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Sir' Dominic Pointer topped St. John's (13-6) with 21 points and guard Rysheed Jordan added 18 points.

Virginia 50, Virginia Tech 47

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Guard Justin Anderson sparked a late rally with eight points in a three-minute span in the second half, and the second-ranked Cavaliers escaped with a victory.

Anderson scored a team-high 12 points, most coming in the final six minutes. He also blocked Hokies guard Malik Muller's 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, helping preserve the Cavaliers' three-point lead.

The Cavaliers (19-0, 7-0 ACC) remained one of two unbeaten teams in Division I, joining Kentucky. But their 19th victory was much more difficult than anyone had imagined. The win wasn't secured until guard Adam Smith's deep 3-pointer at the buzzer spun in and out of the basket. Smith scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Hokies (8-11, 0-6).

Ohio State 82, Indiana 70

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Guard D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points and handed out 10 assists, and forward Jae'Sean Tate added 20 points to lead the Buckeyes past the 23rd-ranked Hoosiers.

Russell hit nine of 15 shots from the field, had six rebounds and made key baskets or assists to keep Indiana at bay. Tate was right there with him. He connected on 9 of 10 from the field, shared the team lead in rebounds with six and scored key buckets in the final minutes to extend the lead for Ohio State (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten).

Point guard Yogi Farrell scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to pace Indiana (15-5, 5-2).

Wichita State 74, Drake 40

WICHITA, Kan. -- With 11 minutes to play, Wichita State's lineup consisted of three freshmen, a junior transfer and a walk-on. That was one of many indications the 14th-ranked Shockers are rolling again through the Missouri Valley Conference, this time beating the overmatched Bulldogs.

The Shockers (18-2, 8-0 MVC) led all 40 minutes and never gave Drake (4-16, 1-7) any hope. Wichita State led 36-19 at halftime and buried the Bulldogs by shooting better than 60 percent most of the second half.

Junior guard Ron Baker led Wichita State with 15 points. Senior guard Tekele Cotton added 10.

Butler 77, Seton Hall 57

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Bulldogs used a staggering 27-3, second-half run to beat the 24th-ranked Pirates for the second time in 12 days.

Butler (15-6, 5-3 Big East) trailed 37-34 when it began the game-deciding blitz that was capped by a layup from guard Roosevelt Jones, giving the Bulldogs a 61-40 lead with 8:09 remaining.

Center Andrew Chrabascz led the Bulldogs with 16 points, guard Kellen Dunham added 15, Jones scored 12 and point guard Alex Barlow had 11. Forward Brandon Mobley paced Seton Hall (13-6, 3-4) with 15 points.

Louisville 80, Pittsburgh 68

PITTSBURGH -- Terry Rozier scored 26 points as the 10th-ranked Cardinals got back on track with an victory over the Panthers.

Rozier scored 18 points in the first half when Louisville shot a blazing 70.8 percent from the field in building a 40-30 halftime lead. The sophomore guard notched his fifth game with at least 20 points this season.

Junior forward Montezl Harrell scored 18 points, and senior guard Chris Jones added 17 points and nine assists for Louisville (15-4, 3-3 ACC), which had lost two of its previous three games. Sophomore forward Jamel Artis scored 18 points for Pitt (13-7, 3-4).

Northern Iowa 54, Illinois 53

NORMAL, Ill. -- Down 12 in the second half, the 20th-ranked Panthers rallied for an improbable win. Reserve forward Nate Buss drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner with 5.2 seconds left for the decisive points.

Guard Daishon Knight had a chance to win it for Illinois State (12-8, 4-4 Missouri Valley Conference), but his driving layup under duress hit the front rim and bounced off as time expired.

Forward Seth Tuttle finished with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for Northern Iowa (18-2, 7-1). The Panthers won their seventh consecutive game after opening conference play with a loss at Evansville. Reserve guard Bobby Hunter paced the Redbirds with 13 points, while center Reggie Lynch and guard Paris Lee each scored 12.

Notre Dame 81, North Carolina State 78 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Guard Jerian Grant scored 25 points, and the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish, who scurried to force overtime, topped the Wolfpack. Grant blocked a 3-point try by North Carolina State guard Trevor Lacey at the end.

Guard Demetrius Jackson and forwards Pat Connaughton and V.J. Beachem added 11 points apiece for Notre Dame (19-2, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Irish forward Zach Auguste had 10 points.

Lacey tallied 13 points to lead North Carolina State (13-8, 4-4). Forwards Kyle Washington and Caleb Martin had 12 points each, while guard Ralston Turner scored 11 and forward Cody Martin had 10.

Villanova 71, Creighton 50

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- A 15-0 run to open the game set the tone as the fourth-ranked Wildcats led wire-to-wire for a victory over the Bluejays.

Villanova (18-2, 5-2 Big East) maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half, going up by as many as 24 while not allowing Creighton to get closer than a dozen points over the final 23 minutes. Senior guard Darrun Hilliard led Villanova with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, while junior point guard Ryan Arcidiacono added 10.

Creighton (9-12, 0-8 Big East) lost its ninth game in a row. Guard James Milliken topped the Bluejays with 13 points.

Maryland 68, Northwestern 67

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Guard/forward Dez Wells made a put-back with 1.4 seconds left to give the 13th-ranked Terrapins a 68-67 win over the Wildcats.

Guard Melo Trimble had 19 of his 27 points in the second half for the Terrapins (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten). The Terrapins trailed by 11 points with 3:45 left.

The Wildcats (10-10, 1-6) took their sixth loss in a row. Guard Bryant McIntosh had 21 points to pace Northwestern, which also led by 11 points at halftime.

Utah 77, Washington 56

SALT LAKE CITY -- Guard Dakarai Tucker scored a career-high 19 points, and guard Brandon Taylor added 14 to lift the 12th-ranked Utes to a win over the Huskies.

Tucker and Taylor combined to make eight 3-pointers, leading Utah (16-3, 6-1 Pac-12) to its 15th straight home victory dating to last season, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped. The Utes led from start to finish and shot 61.1 percent (11-for-18) on 3-point shots.

Guard Andrew Andrews had 19 points to lead Washington, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped. Center Robert Upshaw chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Huskies (14-5, 3-4).

NCAAB Game of the Day: Syracuse at North Carolina

Syracuse Orange at University of North Carolina Tar Heels (OFF, OFF)

Brice Johnson does not lead North Carolina in any major categories, but he just might be the team's most important player. Coming off back-to-back terrific outings, Johnson hopes to fuel the 15th-ranked Tar Heels past visiting Syracuse when the teams square off Monday. Johnson scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting against Wake Forest on Wednesday before recording 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting versus Florida State on Saturday, prompting rave reviews from leading scorer Marcus Paige.

“He played great. ... That’s the type of production - we’ll take that all day," Paige said. "He’s still coming along defensively. He’s better than he’s ever been. So he’s getting there, but his ceiling his so high, too, that we like to see him build on performances." The Tar Heels have won 10 of their last 11 games, while the Orange have dropped two of three following a seven-game winning streak. Both teams are dealing with injuries as Syracuse is without forward Chris McCullough (ACL) while North Carolina is without reserves Joel Berry (groin) and Theo Pinson (foot), not to mention Johnson playing through a back strain.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "The Tar Heels have been winning, but they’ve been a good fade over the last few weeks amid the myriad injuries. You have to wonder if they’re due for an upset with the depth lacking and starters logging a lot of minutes. The Orange haven’t been cashing of late either and they’ve had a pretty soft schedule. It’s a Boeheim team that really lacks any offensive punch. They might be able to stay within the number Monday, but they’re going to have to play a polished game from start to finish." John Lester.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (14-6, 5-2 ACC): Despite 23 points and eight rebounds from Rakeem Christmas, Syracuse dropped a 66-62 decision to Miami (Fla.) on Saturday as the team shot 8-of-19 from the foul line. "You can ask a million questions," coach Jim Boeheim said to reporters afterwards. "Overall, this game was one thing, that's it, nothing else. We make some free throws, we win the game, bottom line." The shorthanded Orange used only six players - four of which played all 40 minutes - including all three of their double-digit scorers on the season - Christmas (18.3), Trevor Cooney (14.1) and Michael Gbinije (10.7).

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (16-4, 6-1): The Tar Heels rank in the top five nationally in both rebounds and assists with J.P. Tokoto serving as a major factor in both categories. The junior forward averages 9.1 points, five rebounds and a team-high 4.1 assists, while four other North Carolina players average double figures in points, led by Paige's 13.8. Kennedy Meeks is second on the team in scoring (12.8) and tops in rebounding (8.3), although he only has surpassed eight rebounds once in his last six games.

TRENDS:

* The Orange are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall
* The Tar Heels are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall
* The Over is 4-1 in the Tar Heels' last five games
* The Over is 5-1-1 in the Orange's last seven after a SU loss

College Basketball: Streaks, Tips, Notes

Syracuse Orange at North Carolina January 26, 07:00 EST

Roy Williams' squad knocked off the Seminoles Saturday in ACC play have now won five straight and ten of eleven with the only blemish over the period a 1-point loss to Notre Dame. Tar Heels (16-4, 11-9 ATS) will look to extend the streak Monday when the host Syracuse Orange (14-6, 6-11 ATS) on Dean E. Smith Center hardwood.

Tar Heels lead by Marcus Paige (13.8) and three others dropping double digits averaging 79.4 PPG on 46.4% shooting have a huge scoring advantage against Orange who check in at 68.4 per/game on 43.8% from the field behind three players in double digits.

When handicapping this contest there are a couple of interesting trends that you should be aware of. UNC has yet to cover at home vs the ACC (0-4 ATS) and hit the hardwood 2-9 ATS it's last ten vs a conference opponent. The 'Over' has hit in 5 of last 8 UNC home games, 6 of last 8 Syracuse road games.

1/26/2015: Monday NBA Free Pick: Celtics at Jazz. Play the Celtics.

Should Utah be this big a favorite over anybody? Boston played last night and the Celtics are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games playing on 0 days rest. They've also been playing well, with a pair of surprising wins on the trip and a 3-0 ATS run. The Jazz is 6-13-2 ATS at home against a team with a road winning percentage of less than .400 and the Celtics are 5-1-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

Play Boston.

(709) PHILADELPHIA 76ERS VS (710) NEW ORLEANS PELICANS

Take: (710) NEW ORLEANS PELICANS

Pelicans much better home team, in fact one of the best in the league. This club is 18-7-1 ATS in their last 16 games, 13-1-1 the last 17 when playing with no rest and 17-8 ATS overall the last 25. Philly is just 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 overall road games. Overall this season on the road Philly is just 8-15 ATS. Take New Orleans here on Monday.

(719) WRIGHT STATE at (720) DETROIT

Take: (720) DETROIT -5

One of the first things I do when looking at same season rematches is to break down the first meeting to see if something peculiar played into the result. I think there’s a case to be made that this was definitely case in the initial duel between Wright State and Detroit.

Detroit is not a great two-point shooting team by any stretch. But in the first meeting with the Raiders, they outdid themselves. The Titans were an almost unbelievable 11/42 on deuces in that clash. Wright State, on the other hand, was a nifty 22/39 on its twos. And that’s about as far as one needs to go to determine why Detroit limped away on the short end of a decisive 70-57 decision.

I expect a different result tonight. Detroit was not bothered at all by the Wright State press in that game as they had only ten turnovers. Assuming they can do as well tonight, it stands to reason their shooting won’t be as wildly off target the second time around.

The visitors are also beat up. Wright State coach Billy Donlon has a very deep rotation, so the Raiders are not truly shorthanded. But the injuries are meaningful. Kendall Griffin, who had been out most of the season, has just gotten back into major minutes but he’s doubtful with a head injury tonight. Steven Davis, one of the more valuable off the bench guys for the Raiders, is on the shelf. Most importantly, JT Yoho, arguably the best player on this team is down with a knee injury. The Raiders are already 0-2 since he got injured and his presence in the paint is being missed.

I see this setting up well for the home team. They’re in at least slightly better current form, they’re a whole lot healthier, the revenge motive is in place and I just can’t see the Titans duplicating the disastrous shooting that took place in the first get together. The number is workable, so I’m taking Detroit minus the points tonight.

UPDATE: Kendall Griffin’s head injury is not severe and he is expected to play tonight for Wright State.

(701) SACRAMENTO KINGS VS (702) NEW YORK KNICKS

Take: (701) SACRAMENTO KINGS

Reason: Your Bonus Play for Monday, January 26, 2015 is in the NBA scheduled contest between the Sacramento Kings and New York Knicks. A lot of was expected from the Knicks this season and it just didn't materialize. New York is 9-36 S/U and 17-27 ATS on the season. They just suffered through a 16-game losing streak, though they have won three of their last four games. Knicks are 2-7 ATS in their last nine games and today maybe without a few key elements. Amar'e Stoudemire is questionable tonight with a bad ankle and guard Jose Calderon is doubtful with a knee issue. Those two players combine for an average of 21.4 ppg and 10.3 rebounds. Not something this Knicks team can ill afford to be without in the lineup. The Kings are 5-2 ATS in their last seven trips to the Big Apple and the road team is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings between these clubs. This is really more of a play against the Knicks than it is on the Kings. Take Sacramento here on Monday.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Brooklyn Nets

1* Bonus Play Portland Trail Blazers

For a number of different reasons I think the Blazers will find a way to get the job done at the end of the night. Portland was in a tail spin until big man LaMarcus Aldridge returned from injury early to pour in 26 points and grab nine boards in a 103-96 win over Washington on Saturday, helping his team end a two-game slide: “I’m not into the rah-rah story," Aldridge said. "I just wanted to come back and play. I wanted to test it out at home, and versus these guys because I felt they were a physical team, and if I could play against these guys then that would be good." From a situational stand point, this is a very important game for Portland, after facing the lowly Nets in the opener of its four game trip, it then travels to Cleveland and Atlanta respectively. And in my opinion, that’s bad news for a Brooklyn team that has allowed opponents to hit 24 of 54 from behind the arc while losing its last two by a whopping combined 74 points. Brooklyn comes in in dissaray, it finished a 1-2 road trip by falling 108-73 in Utah. Note that the Nets will once again be without the services of Deron Williams to a rib injury, a 10th straight game the star guard will sit. And note that Portland is 4-1 ATS this year off an upset win as an underdog, while Brooklyn is already 0-3 ATS this season after playing three consecutive road games. I think the spread should be a little bit larger, consider a second look at PORTLAND in this one.
