Just found Phil Steele's writeup on this contest in this weeks PS:

AUBURN 34 Mississippi St 13 - Last year Auburn had a 315-116 yard edge but only won 3-2. Both are coming off of losing years and in ‘07 Miss St beat Auburn here in Jordan-Hare 19-14 (+13). We liked the Bulldogs here in ‘07 but this year the situation favors Auburn. The fav is 12-5 ATS in the series and Auburn is 15-1 SU and 12-4 ATS in their SEC openers. Miss St has just 10 ret sts and 28 lett lost while Auburn has 15 ret sts. Aub turned in an impressive opener with two 100+ yd rushers (true frosh McCalebb 148, 6.7 and Ben Tate 117, 5.8) while QB Todd threw for 255 (65%) and a 2-0 ratio. MSU defeated Jackson St 45-7 outgaining the lower-tier IAA team 410-194 with QB’s Lee and Relf splitting snaps (comb 172 yds, 64%, 3-0 ratio). Both tms have new HC’s and much more dynamic offenses with MSU HC Mullen bringing in Florida’s off and Aub OC Malzahn bringing in Tulsa’s spread which could mean that TY’s meeting might be the opposite of LY’s defensive slugfest.

SECplayer-- If your reasoning is that Auburn will cover because they beat La Tech and Miss. State lost to La Tech last season, then bless you.

Spreaddestroyer-- When I say similar teams I mean neither team has proved themself, both have a new head coach and coaching staff. I have to disagree with you and say Auburn will not score 40 points.

I'm not trying to tell you people that State will win this game but as GoSooners stated, giving double digits in the SEC is shaky. Auburn will have the advantage being at home. Lets not forget that this State team is a lot better than last year and this Auburn team I don't see anything "special." Anthony Dixon also did not play Saturday and will be back this coming Saturday. Some of yall are acting like State is about to play Ole Miss. That would be a different story...

MSU put the ball on the ground 4 times vs a pathetic Jax St team. While they looked much improved AU looked 10x better. The spread is too big for me, but if I had to pick, Im taking a more experienced AU team at home over MSU playing a ton of rookies.

That was not my reasoning...

Another poster made reference to MSU and LA Tech being comparable and I just threw that tidbit out there.

I've yet to decide if I'll even play this game. I've only decided that there's no way I'd bet on MSU.

Could we please stop w/ the Ole' Missy hype??? Someone please send some spermicide to the entire state of Mississippi! They keep shooting off all over the polls! Sheesh..... They are a FRAUD and I will GUARANTEE right now Auburn will beat them too!

One of us will be a winner...

Bookiebanger, I talked myself into taking Auburn. It's at -14 right now at sportsbook. It's only a 1 unit bet for me but I'm confident.

Spreaddestroyer, I'm not necessarily falling into the hype about Ole Miss either (yet). But, I did read that they've won their last 7 games now by an average of 25.4 points per game. Just tried to check their line and they're off this week so it will be a little while before we know for sure on them.

Gene Chizik is one of the best D coordinators of our time and Gus Malzahn calls a damn good offense. Not to mention there is still plenty of talent on the plains. This is a no brainer here.:drink:

Oh yeah, I forgot .... nevermind i'm on State because Chizik was 5-19 in his two years @ Iowa St.

You ever taken a look at Bear Bryant's record his first year @ A&M????

1) 5-19 is not something I would call best defensive coordinators of all time.
2) Don't compare Chizik to The Bear.

Spread, you might be right and you might be wrong, but one thing that is for sure, is you are invested emotionally far to much for me to take you seriously.

You are correct, but you are omitting one key fact. Auburn has a talented 1st-string, but the talent drops off very dramatically after that:
-At least ten true freshman played against La Tech and that was before it was a blow out
-A walk-on linebacker started the game(the pass coverage from this unit was awful)
-We only have 5 scholarship LB's and 8 scholarship OL's(any injuries to either of these crucial units would be awful)

As an avid Auburn fan I am very impressed with this year's team, it is a vast improvement over last year. But whether we get more than 8 wins is still up in the air and 14 points is a little too much to lay versus another SEC team.

Guys were back, good O-line, good D, and we got play makers. Miss St., well theyre all over the place, QB-Questionable, RB-Doubtful, and I dont think their Denfense is as good as it has been. Mabe Auburn is the sleeper this year.

Easy on my Rebels SpreadDestroyer. I dont think MSU scores aganist AU. Im taking Auburn big. States Oline cant block Auburn and that equals a very long day at the park for the dogs. 31-0 AU. Im not being a hater... I just truly dont believe they will score.

For the record, I have not decided if I will bet this game or not. If so, it will be a small to normal size bet on Auburn.

No way I'd lay money on MSU.

The team MSU beat last week (Jackson State) would not be able to beat half of the junior college teams in Mississippi this year. I'm dead serious and do not mean that with any sarcasm.

MSU was up 14-0 at halftime. Both TDs came as a result of the snapper rolling the ball back to the punter and MSU recovering around the 20 or 30 yard line.

Also, for the record, I hate Auburn. But, Auburn had 1 really bad year that was basically the result of an offensive experiment gone bad (Tony Franklin). The difference in talent assembled at Auburn by Tuberville and the talent assembled by Croom at MSU is vastly different. These teams are not remotely similar.

Not trying to flame. Just wanted to share my input on this SEC game. Although, typing that might influence me to go ahead and play Auburn (but not a play as of yet).

Absolutely right MSU had I believe 3 TD drives of less than 33 yards and also got a 45yr pick 6. That is 28 of their 45 points. I would think that on the road in Jordan-Hare that Aub would be the play as both have new coaches. Folks can say what they want about Coach Tub but he left a ton of talent just waiting to be molded. Auburn has always had talent and unless someone really jacks it up, they always will.

Winone!!

One more thing for the State fans...don't think I am hating on your team. I have made several documented calls here on this forum that you guys would win some games outright that you weren't supposed to win against Auburn AND Alabama in years past. We are all here to knock in the book's teeth, not to play favorites. SEC football is my specialty and also my passion (besides trading stocks). I have called PLENTY of OUTRIGHT double digit SEC dog upsets in years past. Search the threads if need be! Good luck to everyone and may your offshore accounts swell and your local man be sent to the poorhouse!!!:103631605:toast::dancefool:cripwalk:
