UFC star Conor McGregor was released from custody on $50,000 bail Friday after a brief arraignment on assault and criminal mischief charges stemming from Thursday's outburst at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
McGregor was charged with three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony criminal mischief after he turned himself Thursday night, according to the New York City Police Department.
McGregor, 29, unexpectedly showed up at a UFC 223 media event Thursday at Barclays Center and was caught on camera throwing a hand dolly through the window of a bus that was carrying UFC fighters.
"There was a dispute about a vacated title, and the person he was arguing with was not injured," Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said. "He was on the bus, though."
The judge issued an order of protection involving several of the fighters, including Ray Borg and Michael Chiesa. She ordered McGregor to stay away from them and noted that includes social media messages.
"He is captured on video surveillance picking up a chair and throwing it at the window of a passenger bus," the prosecutor said. "Two individuals on the bus sustained injuries. The defendant also throws a punch at someone who was on a security detail."
Defense attorney Jim Walden asked that McGregor, who is from Ireland, be allowed to keep his passport so he can travel and "pursue his craft." Walden said there was no risk McGregor would not return to court on June 14 to answer the charges.
"He's the most visible face on the planet," Walden said. "He has no criminal history."
Bail bondsman Ira Judelson confirmed to ESPN that McGregor needs to report to him once a week by phone and have his travel pre-approved.
McGregor appeared alongside Cian Cowley, a friend and training partner of his from Dublin's SBG Ireland. Cowley was involved in the incident and has been charged with one count of assault and one count criminal mischief. His bail was set at $25,000.
McGregor hasn't fought in the UFC since November 2016; UFC president Dana White stripped McGregor this week of the 155-pound championship he had never defended. His last bout was in the boxing ring, when he fought Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.
Khabib Nurmagomedov will face Al Iaquinta on Saturday in the main event of UFC 223 for the undisputed lightweight title, which McGregor held.
