4 of the Patriots' 5 O-lineman are injured, and the 5th is playing out of position because of that. 2 of their 3 primary backups are hurt, and, as expected, many of the practice squad players they've been forced to throw at the wall haven't stuck. The Patriots have a lot of issues, but how good would any team be with an ever shifting O-line of practice squad players? IMO even the Chiefs would be .500 or worse with such a banged up front 5. The missed blocks, false starts and holding penalties are a symptom of the injuries, not incompetence by Mayo or any of the other coaches.
In the long run this will probably work out in NE's favor as long as Maye doesn't get hurt, as their improved draft position will help them better address some of the other issues they have. Of all the teams with 2 or fewer wins IMO the Patriots are in the best position to turn it around longterm.
