Call me delusional, but I don't think this is going to be the great collapse, I see a short term drop to maybe 13k the lowest and then makes it way back up...

I think within the next 10 years, by 2025, the world will see things it never could have ever imagined in its wildest dreams......will it be the great collapse, well, I think we will see a great collapse within 10 years, then again, I could be totally wrong.

Im blind when it comes to stocks...so the big # is the number for all of the stocks combined that is associated with the nasdaq or dow?

Is there any rhyme to reason or is it just "split your portfolio" so if the market is good everything will go up anyway rather than put it in a couple and lose your ass if one does bad? (what people told me and from a couple classes throughout the years)

This may sound dumb too but is there a minimum that you have to start with?

The big # is the dow. I have an account with Scottrade, the minimum deposit is $500.

Yeah, the idea is that if you have a lower risk tolerance and/or dont have time to research/monitor individual stocks that the indexes like the dow, nasdaq, etc give you broad exposure and diversification with somewhat less volatility than most individual stocks

i use merrill but some guys I work with that are just getting started use this platform to trade for free....might be low/no min

good luck if you choose to invest...over the long term you have a good chance of doing just fine if you pick a low cost index fund

I believe govt mutual funds/bonds or whatever they call them do well when the regular stock & the rest of the economy tanks, am I right or wrong on this?

mutual funds often include stocks so they can tank as well, but yes on bonds, they generally provide a much more modest but more secure return, they can also have certain tax advantages

It depends what type of crash it is.

Bonds could easily get crushed in a debt crisis. The next recession will probably have to do with a failure of central banking/gov't debt. Atleast a restructuring....

Can't really go wrong with T-bills but the yield sucks right now.

think (and hope) you guys are wrong! every generation has turmoil but history suggests that humans are awfully resilient

Yes, to anyone worried about their kids or grandkids future.

The next 20 years should be pretty awesome. We just gotta get antiquated and flawed societal models out of the way first.

Also we might have to hit the button on China, but this isn't really the thread for that.

Dow went from up 400 points to down 200 points in the biggest 1 day reversal since 2008. No confidence in this market at all. People who continue to be bullish as currency values are plummeting.

Man, that's a huge disappointment. I checked it mid-afternoon and it was up 300 points.

Unbelievable

i still think precious metals turn and turn violently at some point the more volatility the better for them esp if the trend is down for the markets. think silver at these prices is ridiculous. todays reversal is bad news, these markets should head lower, there will be pops but i dont think they will lead to any rally unless the fed comes out and does something silly like QE4.
