he shouldn't have reported anything
and he would have been fine.
this will result in even less people reporting.
what percent report anyways? 5%?

When the guy stated in North Dakota --he was a "professional gambler" on tax returns--he was doomed. I know for me it is for recreation, but I could not live on it!

>>>>In April, when agents from the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation served a search warrant at Trauman’s home, they found $43,000 in cash in one desk drawer, according to Schlosser’s report.<<<<<

Jeez, a friggin “search warrant” for making a wager online? And I wonder how many “agents’ it took to search this home? And people don’t think we’re moving toward a police state? And America is the “land of the free?”

I’ll bet (Is the word ‘bet’ still legal?) I know how the new law prohibiting online gaming came about. Representative for various N. Dakota Indian casinos, …well, need I say more?

I hope this guy fights this case to the bitter end. This is a personal freedom issue.

Does the state get to keep all this guys winnings, as his activities were illegal? Could that be the reason for all the agents and the search warrant?

You might remember I asked last week if America was the "land of the Free".

D2bets--I thought (could be wrong you were a lawyer. Maybe you could shed some light on this issue?

Shrink-you live in Va. (You must know something about state law).

As far as I know it is illegal in every state to place sport bets offshore.

True ???

Somebody e-mailed me that my article has started a lot of conversation on these sights. From reading your posts, I see there's a few things I missed in the story. For one, no one would tell me how or why the investigation got started. Someone also asked about his winnings getting confiscated -- I never asked, but I never got the indication that he wouldn't be able to keep his winnings. His attorney never brought it up, either.

The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead. I guess I should have thought of a cooler screen name than my login at work, huh. I'm taking off from the office, now, but I'll check back later if you have any questions.

The guy this happened to posted across the street. He stated the IRS asked the Attorney General to check him out because they thought he was a big bookmaking operation. When they found out he wasn't they were relieved.

He said he isn't actually worried about the charges, based on what his attorney told him. And they might not even charge him.

But, his days of doing this in N Dakota are done.

I think the good news here is the reason this all started was because they thought he was a bookmaker, and didn't actually go after him because of his sports betting, assuming they were telling the truth.

I have talked to this guy before, he is the real deal. He played everywhere offshore, bet his own stuff and won tons of cash. I hope he enjoys his new state.
