1) Goaltending goaltending goaltending - There is no doubt Biron came into these playoffs never having been in them. People thought he would be the weak part of this hockey club. He was not spectacular in the Caps series, but he has gotten better every game. He is obviously the MVP of the series against the Habs right now. I dont think anyone watching the games could argue.
2.) Balanced scoring - Montreal is not getting production from anyone other then then big unit. Without Kovalev and Koivu in this series where would you be? Sure tom kostopolous scored a goal , but lets face it he shot it into an empty net.
on the flip. the flyers got through round one because of danny breiere and vinny prospal. they carried the team. sure we got two big goals from knuble and lupul, but other then those goals, they didnt put the puck in the net. briere and prospal made things happen in the first series and got us here.
now in the second round frankly i dont think briere has been as big a factor. sure he netted the winner last night on the power play, but at 5on5 he kinda just blends in lately. i think the pressure of playing canada may be on him. but who is carrying us? RJ Umberger and jeff carter. these two kids came to play this round, and have carried the team. umberger is probably as hot as anyone in the playoffs right now. sure a few of his goals were soft, but the end line is if they go in they count.
3.) the PK. The penalty kill has been downright awesome. They have forced montreal to play their penalty kill from the outside instead of letting them work the lanes like they did so well during the regular season. guys like thoresen and richards have done an outstanding job. that and they scored a SH goal in game 3 which was a huge one.
4) conditioning - the flyers are obviously not the faster team here, and they will be the slowest team left in the playoffs. they must must must play the body. the second goal last night was a turnover by a Hab in the neutral zone because he heard the footsteps. he threw that puck right onto prospals stick and sent him the other way.
5) capitalize - the flyers have taken advantage of every chance they have been given. on the flip side the Habs have not. you had a 5-3 power play in game 3. u scored two goals and got within 1. then minutes later u had another man advantage to tie the game and didnt get it done. in game 1 u got a power play late, scored to tie it and won in overtime. since that time u havent done a lick to capitalize in this series.
on the reverse, the flyers got a call last night late which was 100% a penalty. a dumb one by begnin but it was one. wat did we do? instead of folding up like a tent after blowing a late lead, we score to end it.
6) mental aspect -in a best of 7 series mental aspect comes into play. the Habs were riding high after game 1 comeback no doubt and rightfully so. but another quick 2 goal lead by philly in game 2, and then again in game 3, and then again in game 4. trust me we arent the only ones who know it. the players know it too, and i think u can see it in the play the habs know it and they feel like biron is a wall.
guy took a huge risk last night playing halak. he let in a bad goal, but otherwise played decent. he looks shaky back there but he makes the saves. hasek looked unorthodox as well, and well hes one of the best goalies ever.
now you head back to montreal down 3-1 with two days off to let the flyers rest, and surely they need it. the question is mentally where is montreal? they have to feel horrible and now they have two goalies who have to be mentally beat down. do u go back to price and if he loses game 5 ruin his career? or do u stick with halak and basically tell price hes done.
obviously in my mind guy thought he couldnt win this series with carey price as his goalie and that is why he made the change. there is no other reason i could see other then he made a decision that he wasnt gonna be able to pull this off with price as his netminder. i wouldnt want to be him thats for sure.
these are my thoughts. i dont know what u people think or how u see it, but its quite simple to me.
we have gotten spectacular goaltending, we have capitalized on every chance we have been given, we jump out to leads so we arent chasing the game, and we have played excellent on the PK.
u guys have outshot the flyers, are faster then the flyers, and have had significantly more time on the power play then the flyers. all the while getting subpar goaltending.
dispute these thoughts for me.
