A BCS First As '06 Champ Faces '07 Champ
LSU's game against Florida on Saturday will be a BCS first as it will mark the first time that two teams who have won the previous two BCS National Championships will meet. Florida won the BCS national title in 2006, while LSU claimed the title in 2007. Since the inception of the BCS in 1998, no two teams who have combined to win the two previous BCS national titles have ever met on the football field. As a matter of fact, the last time that the two previous national champions squared off came in 1990 when Notre Dame (1988 champ) beat Miami (1989 champ), 29-20 in South Bend. The LSU-Florida game will mark the 10th time in the history of college football that the last two national champions will meet the following year.
When the last 2 champions meet, the "home" team is 7-0 straight up.
Miles' 38 Wins In First 44 Games Ranks First In SEC History
Les Miles' list of achievements at LSU is both lengthy and impressive. However, perhaps the most impressive item on his list of accomplishments is the fact that he ranks first in SEC history for wins after 44 games with 38. Miles' 38 wins puts him ahead of such names as Mark Richt (35), Steve Spurrier (34) and Bernie Moore (33). The following is a quick look at some of Miles' highlights during his four years with the Tigers:
Only coach in LSU history to beat Auburn, Florida and Alabama in same season - and he's done it twice
Only first-year coach in SEC history to lead team to league's title game
Has 6 wins over coaches who have won national titles
Coached LSU to 10-plus wins in three straight seasons - a first at the school
Only coach in LSU history to lead Tigers to three straight top five final rankings
LSU's Best After Dark - Tigers Have Won 19 Straight Night Games
Night games in Tiger Stadium seem to bring out the best in LSU. However, lately LSU has been at its best no matter the location just as long as it dark outside. LSU goes into the Florida game having won 19 straight night games. The 19 straight wins at night (note: NCAA determines that a kickoff at 5 p.m. or later is a night game) includes three games this year, seven games in 2007, eight in 2006 and the win over Miami in the Peach Bowl to cap the 2005 season. LSU hasn't lost a night game since a 34-14 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in 2005. Overall, LSU coach Les Miles has guided the Tigers to a 25-2 mark in night games, which includes a 4-0 mark in road night games.
Another Top 10 Road Win For Miles and LSU
LSU ran its record in road games against top 10 teams to 4-2 under Les Miles with the win over Auburn on Sept. 20. LSU's top 10 road wins since the start of the 2005 season have come against Alabama (2005), Tennessee (2006), Arkansas (2006) and Auburn (2007).
Miles Is 21-5 In SEC Regular Season Games
LSU coach Les Miles improved his record in SEC regular season games to 21-5 following the win over Auburn. Miles was 7-1 in 2005 in conference games followed by a 6-2 record in both 2006 and 2007.
