The only argument I can understand is that the cops should have known that her new boyfriend was in there and was a legal gun owner.

That changes the approach and dynamics of the operation. Maybe pick a different night and wait until he's not home if that's the approach you want to take.

But still, she brought this all on herself with the choices she made.

The cops thought she was alone in the apartment the night she was killed. They had no idea she had a new boyfriend and that that boyfriend was in her apartment that night.

Were the cops conducting surveillance asleep?
