What Sundin would do for Vancouver is get them into the playoffs and give them a chance to go deep, which makes the team more money and gives the fans something to be excited about. It's not like signing him is going to kill the team for the future because it won't at all.

I also don't agree that they have no shot. Are they one of the top 10 teams in the league? No they aren't, but if you get one of the top 10 players (and Sundin is a top 10 player) to go along with some good young guys in the Sedins, a good defense and the top goaltender in hockey and you have a shot. They just need to get into the playoffs, and then you have the chance of Luongo dominating and winning you games you have no business being in.

Heard rumors Malkin went to Pens, wasn't in our local rag; glad you guys picked up on it. Frankly & I said it when he went from Atl. to Pitts, Hossa is the most over-pg., over-rated player in the league. He'd better get his cup next yr. or maybe never. With the cap growing most teams (not my frugal Sabres) who filled HSBC w/18,650 cap. every gm. last yr. Cost me $150 for a cheap seat and $250 for a good one. Oilers made a $10 mil. move on Vanek last yr., just got Eric Cole, & are willing to outspend the spenders. Guess they want to get back to their glory yrs. What did overpaying Thornton & Soupy do for the Sharks last yr. Nada. Because of my analyses & picks on the forum have been getting a lot of e-mail re:hockey, nice to be in a place where you guys know your stuff. With Crystal-ball & Soupy, if Kane & Toews don't get the sophomore jinx, Hawks could be a con rather than pre tender. Shit, on top of Briere, Drury, Soupy, I think we're going to lose Teppo. No "O" no "D" just Miller. Wow, what a show for a 3.5 hr. drive & $250 a pop! RDS

Canucks just got Bernier from Buffalo for a 2nd Rd in 2010 and a 3rd in 2009.
Sabres need to get an F'N defenseman. I truly believe Darcy must go. I am starting to think Miller is not going to sign and then it will be his ass finally.

Sabres just got their D-man.
Craig Rivet from the Sahrks for 2 second rounders. Not really thrilled-but better than draft picks

Bernier could be a steal. The guy has all the talent in the world if he ever puts it to use.

Didn't do much with the Sabres at the end of the season--everyone says the potential is there though.

Jdig, Canucks are still about 18-19 million under the cap and there's not really too many free agents left to sign. So signing Sundin to a 10 million contract for only 2 years isn't really gonna handcuff them too much. He is a top line player, you get someone decent to play with him and you basically have a first line, then a very good second line with the Sedins. Also have a great checking line Kesler , Burrows and Pettinger. Very very good defence corp that was killed by injuries last season, and one of the top goalies in the NHL. This team isn't as far off as you think, it all starts with signing Sundin and getting a number 1 scoring line. If they don't sign him and can't acquire any big players through trade, then I think you'll see them trade Luongo at some point and go with youth. My own opinion is I don't think you'll see Sundin sign here anyways. He'll probably go to New York or Montreal

Not a chance he goes to New York. I don't think so anyways.

I think it's between Toronto and Vancouver and if I had to bet my money would be that he's in a Leafs uniform next season.

Yeah i hear what your saying van fan. I mean the way the league is now, its anyones game once you make the playoffs, and luongo is capable of stealing a game or two himself,

my whole thought process is this. Do i think given what everyone else in the west has done. i.e. the wings, and sharks that i can win right now? or can win in the next two years with sundin at 10 mil per year?

my answer would be no. im not bashing the team im thinkin about it in a sense of a GM. so what would i do? just what u referred to. go young.

you just got breiner who is a good young talent. So i would start shopping luongo right now before next year when miller and bulin become free agents and the market is flooded with good goalies.

my first call would be to the flyers. i would swap luongo for either biron or nitty, and both of them come off ur books next year, and ovbiously your getting more then that for luongo, but you have a above avg goalie coming back ur way and some talent. trust me this is all a pipe dream but thats how i would start.

sundin is a nice player no doubt. but to blow 10 mil on him this year and next is dumb. especially when i gotta start thinking about my goaltending situation

85 million over 9 years is what Edmonton offered. I understand that he has friends in Edmonton, but the only teams he really considered for the 1 year were Detroit and Pittsburgh. I think if he were to take the money, he would have signed in Boston.

With that being said as a Pens fan, I am very happy with what management has done (signed every key part for the next 7 years) and other moves.

Without question Detroit has the best chance to win the cup next year, but this whole 'going to another city for a year to win a title' usually ends with egg on the face. Other than Ray when he went to Colorado, it's never worked out.

Eric, from what I am hearing Hossa was very close to going to Edmonton. He actually stated he'd like to play in a Canadian city, has a couple friends on the Oilers who he'd spoken with seriously about playing there and was very impressed with their team and all the young great talent they have. Sportsnet said last night the Oilers offer for Hossa was 80 million for 9 years. I think its obvious Detroit has the best shot at the cup next year though and thats why we saw him sign a 1 year deal there to take a shot at it. I guess we will see this all over again next summer and I'm sure you'll see him go to the highest bidder at that point. As a Canuck fan, I'm quite happy Hossa ended up in Detroit and not with the Oilers.

Jdig, I think I read somewhere that the Flyers are about 4 million over the cap right now, any idea what they are gonna to to shed some salary before the season starts?? I guess I see now why they had to get rid of Umberger during the draft, especially having to re-sign Carter.

Flyers right now sit at just over 1.2 million over the cap.

They arent done dealing obviously because they need to get under the cap.

There is still question whether hatcher will play or retire, and that would be 3.5 million off the books right there if he calls it a career.

I would expect a guy like knuble to get moved before the season opens up. Also the flyers have gagne who may or may not ever be fully healthy again, and thats another 5million+ that would be freed up.

I know many people talk about holmgren spending too much money, but i love what hes done. we have a good young defense that needs to grow and we have carter, richards, and briere locked up.

next year we know for sure we rid ourselves of hatcher, biron, knuble, nittymakki and so on. this wasnt our offseason to make a free agent splash.
