I've driven round trip to LV four times from Ohio and alot of other places further along than LV. 3 of the 4 trips I was alone.

Making a trip like that in 30 hours probably isnt going to happen anyway, and if it does you arent going to enjoy any of the scenery along the way.

Besides, since you are moving away from home with your fiancee, why not enjoy the trip together rather than seeing how quickly you guys can get there?

I kind of see your point. I have talked to fiancee and said things like how fun this will be and this and that because I do think it can be a decent expierence. My 2 problems lie in 1) the dogs who love the vehicle but when they go for rides (which is a handful of time each week) it is windows down and highly intense riding for them so I have know idea how they will respond and 2) (and this is the biggie) our cat HATES being in a vehicle. We have practiced a few times with stuff like benadryl and other stuff from the vet and still nothing. We are down to the last chance drug and we have a long ways to go with this expierment. I guess we drive and try and block out the screaming the cat is doing, it isnt like he is any pain.

Since Ive done alot of driving, my own personal advice is make this at least a 2 night trip and enjoy some of the scenery.

If you dont already have one, get a cage for the cat. If not, it could get loose and if you lose a pet during this trip, it could spoil the entire move. The cat will eventually calm down, but some cats that really dont like being outside their home have died, so be careful. Also, with the cat in a cage, the dogs can enjoy the windows being down a bit.

The first night, stop when you get tired and get a room someplace in Nebraska. The reason is that the next day the drive will be more interesting if you have as much daylight as possible (to enjoy the scenery) driving through Colorado.

The second night, stop in either Cedar City or St. George, Utah (near NV state line), get dinner and a room there, and drive into LV first thing the following morning.

That way, both of you will be rested, your pets will have calmed down from the driving, and you will arrive in LV with positive emotions. Imo how both of you feel when you initially arrive will be very important.

At mimimum, time the trip so you stay one night in Utah and drive into LV feeling refreshed instead of exhausted and agitated.

Hope this helps.

Great post DD. Thanks for taking the time. GF has it all mapped out but I will be sure to read this post to her. I agree 100% with pulling into town rested, excitied, with a positive frame of mind. I can imagine a lot of emotions will be going thru both of us when we arrive, it would be nice to be feeling good when we first get there.

I know she mapped some things out but to be perfectly honest with you I have thought that nice scenery while we are driving, can be very important. Neither one of us has ever drove a distance like this before and I think we can make it enjoyable if we do some of the things like you talked about.

As far as the dogs, I think they might actually like this. The cat is a different story, he always goes in a cage when we drive. He completely falls apart and pisses all over the place. It is really bad. The worse part is the constant crying, which is sad and irriatating all rolled into one. I am crossing my fingers he QUICKLY adjusts or tires out and calms down. I have even mentioned how with him being an older cat (12 yrs old) that this could be dangerous to his health. I have to believe that this cant be good for him at all. If it wasnt for him I would be pretty confident about the whole thing.

I went in on a deal with a sales rep from a top biomed company to skim some easy inside money. I rented a truck and backed it up to an agency on a DC street, blocking rush hour traffic, and quickly dismantled a valuable two ton stainless steel fermenter (similar to a big-ass beer fermenters) from its electrics and plumbing and quickly jacked it up a ramp into the truck and drove all night to Blacksburg Va Tech through snow. Next morning I presented myself to the researchers and backed the truck into position and ramped the fermenter down as if I knew what I was doing, and carted it into the prepared lab and gave them advice on the install. I made three or four K on the deal and celebrated all the way back to DC.

Kill the cat and tell the fiance that it ran away.

Got to somerville, tn to switch cars with my mother (15minutes), turned around and drove back to jacksonville. No hotels, no sleeping, nothing but cokes and chips. Thanks goodness for good conversation and XM radio.

Total driving time = 24hrs
total distance = 1,400miles

without lodging or sleep.

As a kid and a depenent of the military we drove cross country a couple few times.

We always took it as a two week excursion.

I remember going to Colorado Springs,Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon some petrified forest and of course Vegas and all that crap.

The cats were sedated and I fought alot with brother and sister.

Was fun and good experience as I've seen a good portion of the good ole USA.

one trip i specifically remeber leaving Manhattan, NY at 7 PM, at the Lincoln or Holland tunnel, anyway, the idea was to drive till we got tired and get a room somewhere in Pennsylvania or eastern Ohio...

well, as we got along on a saturday night and started to look for rooms, i recall around wheeling, WV, EVERYTHING was booked...

By the Time we got to Columbus, oh it was like 3 or 4 AM and we thought fuck it, just keep going at this point, got to Champaign at 7 AM, so i remember it being a 12 hours trip, 7 PM to 7 AM, though actually picked up an hour so it was 13 hours. anyway, somewhere around Indianapolis i was driving, and i swear there was nothing i could do for a stretch to stay awake...Wild ride, wasn't meant to be that way but thats how it turned out!

Driven from the Virginia coast to Vegas twice

Oh, FUCK THAT!!!!!!!!!!!

We did a Lincoln to Vegas run straight & I'd never do it again. If we weren't broke ass college students, I think we would have all flown back.

Ice The wife has made many trips with cats. She says to cover the carrier with a thin blanket. She has driven from KC to detroit 2 times. She did this both times and said it helped.

Thanks see if she has anymore tips as we are at our wits end with this. I love the cat to death but I am not sure what to do next (well I have an idea but I dont want to say, relax I am totally kidding. We would NEVER hurt any animal let alone our own).

We have give the cat a few different drugs to practice and the cat takes the drugs like nothing, it doesnt even tire the cat out. We have obviously upped the dosage, still nothing. We are up to 3/4 of a pill and the cat is fine, not tired at all. Vet said no more than 1 whole pill. This is around the 3rd different drug we have tried this week.

We put it in a cage, tried it without a cage. Lined cage with blanket. Bought some herbal supllement that suppossedly smells like a mother cat but our cat is 12 years old I doubt he remembers the smell. Cat starts pissing everywhere, all over himself. It is sad but the worse part is the screaming, it is really bad. Makes me sad for the cat even though it isnt hurt at all. Eventually the sadness leaves and you get frustrated to the point you cant think about anything else. Hell, I am getting sick just describing it again, LOL. And all of this over a 30 minute test drive, imagine 30 hours.

I believe there are services that will transport domesticated animals. Ask your vet. It may cost a few, but would expand your travel options if you don't have to be constantly responding to the needs of three non-humans.

Did a move with 2 dogs and wife and a 7 year old in 96' from Long Island Ny to Vegas..Had planned to do it in 4 days,lol....Van broke down in Springfield Mo for 4 days, Hit a blizzard in New Mexico (I didn't even know back then it snowed there!) and almost got killed coming down the hellacious mountain in Arizona with the glare of the sunset. Wife pointed out every gas price along the way (It's even more annoying now!) and one of the dogs had the sh@#s from Pennsylvania on as i was feeding them chicken mcNuggets for dinner every night:ohno:. Hell of a trip.....
Looking back though i wouldn't have changed it for the world. While it seemed that nothing could go right it was certainly a experience. Still have the same dogs (although they are 15 now) and loved traveling with them in their younger days unfortunately along with age comes the usual health issues (Bad legs etc) and looks like those days are winding down:sad3:. I'll always have those memories though
Good luck on your move Iceman. I just signed up here but have following the threads for the last few weeks and you seem like a good guy. If you need any advice or info about Vegas just ask as i lived there from 1996-2006.. Just don't let Vegas control you and you'll be fine. Take advantage of the good stuff Vegas has to offer.
When i used to get stressed with Vegas life i would take a day and head up to Mt. Charleston or a 3 day trip up to Tahoe when time allowed. A break every now and then really helps with burn out. have a safe trip.

I know it probably won't seem far compared to the distances of some of the other posters, howecer i make the trip to South Carolina three times a summer with three dogs. never a problem, take my time have certain spots picked out for the dogs and they get in and go to sleep. it is 1200 miles and i do it in a day and one half. Take my time, eat at good restuarant's and take pelnty of snaks in a cooler.

Drove from NY to Panama City, FL and back for spring break in college with about 10 friends. Also drove from NY down to Charleston, SC, then to Atlanta and from there to LA with a friend the summer before law school. Driving long distances is actually pretty fun if you are with someone. As others have said, don't rush it and try to jam it in as quickly as possible.
