I think the difference with Cunningham was that he TOTALLY relied on his athleticism to win, much like many NCAA quarterbacks do. No one really expected too much from Cunningham because they didn't think he had the mind or patience to be a true NFL general on the field. (Had nothing to do with his race, either.)
McNabb is a great athlete, but he has also demonstrated that he can be a pocket passer, audible against certain defensive sets, control the tempo of games, and many other things that a true NFL QB does. So, ironically, since McNabb has demonstrated some thinking ability along with physical ability, people expect more from him and come down harder on him.
Also, people don't expect much from losing teams. Since Philly is now in the hunt every year, people expect more from every player, but especially the QB.

The only reason DM is bashed to the extent that he is is that a hardcore conservative radio host with millions of fans whacked McNabb on national TV...Had it never been said this discussion wouldn't even be here. In fact, some of these people would not even use the word overrated to describe him, (nor had they ever thought it before) but once their fat drug-induced leader said it, the flood gates were open...
Like I said in another post...had Limbaugh said it about McNair or any other good black quarterback, and he would have said it had the Titans been playing that monday night, these same people would be bashing McNair.
Randall Cunningham was a good story. He was a horrible quarterback.
