Do you believe in a dude crushing four beers and running a mile, all in under five minutes? YES! YES!
A guy by the name of James Nielsen, who is basically the Roger Bannister of beer running, set the world record for the “beer mile” when he recorded a time of 4:57, shattering the 5-minute mark that seemed all but impossible to crack. (I’m assuming this. I learned what a beer mile was like 20 minutes ago.)
A beer mile is when you run a standard mile on a track, but must chug a 12-ounce can of beer for every 400-meter lap. Four beers, in other words. Also, the beer has to have higher than a 5.0 in alcohol concentration, because what do you think this is, some kind of joke? Also no vomiting is allowed.
There are rules here.
From
FloTrack.org:
Neilson unofficially split 63 seconds for his first and second laps. His slowest lap was his second as he ran 68 seconds, but recovered with a 67 in his third lap. It did not take Nielsen longer than 12 seconds to drink any of his beers. His fastest chug was seven seconds for his first beer. He split 8, 12 and 9 seconds for the rest of the drinks in the race against the clock.
Fascinating.
On
BeerMile.com, which is a shockingly detailed website, you can see the previous world record holders, along with their times and beers of choice.
Olympian Nick Symmonds even commented on Nielsen’s accomplishments, telling FloTrack.org:
“Incredible beer splits! Huge congrats to him. I guess I better start training.”
Symmonds previously attempted to break the world record for the beer mile in 2012, but he failed. Earlier this year, he
blogged about trying for the record again.
Your task just got all the more difficult, Symmonds. Nielsen just dropped a sub-5 bomb on the world.
