It's hard for the committee to actually just put in "4 best" since that clearly introduces the subjective nature of evaluating teams

The reality is college football is just a hard sport to find the right solution to given the size, variance in conference difficulty, etc. And it's hard to actually decipher the gaps in conference since all the games are played within conference for the most part aside from exhibition games (bowls) that have little meaning, and then the occasional marquee OOC game -- but those are early in the season when teams haven't rounded into form yet

In "theory" you'd want 4 undefeated power-5 conference champs, but I think anyone who has followed the sport knows that Washington and Florida State are not true top 4 teams. Very rare that you'd ever get the 4 best teams all being from different conferences

They have historically gone with the 4 most-deserving teams, and the result has been lopsided semifinal match-ups for the most part.

I agree that it's better for the sport if it's just "4 best" teams, but that is hard to conclude and justify, and kind of takes away incentive and value for conference titles

Obviously the format is changing, but this sport will never be perfect

It looks like Florida State's backup is injured now/concussed

So third string true freshman

Not sure if it impacts playoff selection chances if they win since Rodemaker will be back for a potential playoff game, but gotta think it hurts their chances Saturday

4 "best" Just an opinion
Leave it on the field if it is major conference.
True

I just think it's tough to see the historical results of the CFP semis and justify that the system consistently did its job by letting fluffy conference champs in

If they don't take an undefeated power 5 team, why play the season at all?
The rationale would be that they aren't the same team without their best player, and that the ACC is such a dogshit conference that it really doesn't carry the weight of a true power 5 conference

I could see the injury rationale, but remember in the first season of the playoff Ohio State won win a third-string quarterback, and they lost to unranked Virginia Tech at home by 14 early in the season

Not quite the same though I guess

Georgia -17
Michigan -14
Washington -6
Oregon -13
Texas -11
Ohio State -14
Alabama -14

just guessing
Add several more points to each of these now that they are down to their #3 QB.

Vegas knows Fla State is not even in the top 7 teams. We know it too. They put Cincinnati in the playoffs 2 yrs ago in a similar situation, they lost by over 20 points.

So Florida State has no business being in the playoffs even if they win.

They very well might lose and the problem goes away.

Y'all know I'm still sitting on Ohio State futures, the first one from August. I know its a long shot for them to be one of the final 4 teams but alll they'll need is a Okie State upset of Texas. I don't really care what FSU does, it won't matter. Or maybe even a Iowa upset of Michigan. Ya never know 😆. If they don't get in i won't lose any sleep over it. I've more than made my money back this season and it won't be the first or last time I've lost a bet.

Today, conference refs will want Texas, Michigan and Florida State to win, get their conference into the 4 team playoffs. Michigan may not need much help.

Texas ha cemented being above Ohio state. Ohio state can’t get in now.

Bama wins Florida state wins there will be a debate. For the 4th spot.

The SEC-free playoff looks possible to me

Also originally though Michigan was a lock to be in no matter what, but I don't think that's the case anymore
