The logo is not really about a certain player. It wasn’t about who the best player was. In fact, West was never officially acknowledged to be the logo. The league was even unhappy when everybody learned it was West. According to the designer, he used West’s photo just as an inspiration or model for what figure should be best in the logo. He chose from among many photos of different players for a model figure and he liked West’s best because according to him “it was nice and vertical and it had him leaning and dribbling, and had a little motion to it.” That’s about it.
