Because these aren't movies that people are going to drive a good distance to go see -- so if the movie isn't playing in a local theater (because of a lesser screen count), then a lot of people will choose to just see something else.
I'm not saying that screen counts have everything to do with what these flicks are making, but it does have a definite impact. If a movie is showing at 3pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, 8pm it will certainly do more business than just a 7pm showing would.

Horror/Suspense, which is doing very well in the box office right now. Do to that fact alone, I would take it over $12 million. Throw in Depp, it being a King adaptation (which has a small personal niche of its own), it having more or less no competition, and having a screen count of OVER 3000 -- and I think it goes substantially over $12 million.
