Joe Mazzulla remains head coach of the Boston Celtics and will return next season, team president Brad Stevens said Thursday.
"He's a terrific leader," Stevens said. "He'll only get better at anything that he can learn from this year, because he's constantly trying to learn. And he's accountable."
Mazzulla, 34, led the Celtics to a 57-25 record and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference in his first season on the bench. Boston's season ended Monday with a Game 7 loss to the Miami Heat in the East finals.
Mazzulla took over when coach Ime Udoka was suspended for the season in September for multiple violations of team rules. He reportedly had a consensual relationship with an unidentified female staff member.
Three Celtics assistant coaches -- Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles and Mike Mose -- are reportedly leaving to rejoin Udoka, who was named head coach of the Houston Rockets last month.

Rumor has it their old coach (now on Houston) is taking some of Joe's assistants with him to Houston

I heard during time outs, Al Horford would sit in the coaches chair talking to the team while Joe would stand and chat with his assistants. Then with 20 seconds left in the timeout, Joe would talk to the team

They need a strong coach to up their collective basketball IQ. Joe Mazzulla ain't that guy.

Very disappointed in what I heard out of the Brad Stevens press conference today.

Who are they gonna go get? 4 coaches in 4 years wouldn't exactly be great for the team

They have many problems beyond coaching

They had similar issues last year with Ime. Their offense in the Finals was unwatchable

Was Horford telling them how to foul a 3 point shooter when having him trapped to desperately try to end their season? ;)

Joe actually told him not to foul, but Horford didn't respect that and fouled him anyway

Guy has lost the locker room

People forget that team even with a slightly different cast of characters was a clown show under Brad Stevens by the end of his tenure as HC....

Instead of firing him like many thought would happen he got bumped upstairs.

Ime was a good coach, a strong coach. But when the finals came against Golden State he froze and refused to use his bench. Those Celtic starters were dragging ass at the back end of every game with the Warriors. That. in my opinion was Ime's fault. If I were Brad Stevens I would have sat him down after all was said and done and told him exactly what I just typed, If Ime used the same game plan into this year's playoffs (which of course would have failed again) I would have shown him the door. If Ime was still coaching and used his bench I believe the Cs would still be playing. It would have never gotten to Game 7 for Tatum to get hurt and seal their demise.

Who do they get? I have no idea. Mazzulla was a back bench guy. It shouldn't be hard to replace him with someone who isn't afraid to call time outs and set up plays for certain players. To set up schemes as they were called for. I personally don't think Mazzulla had the balls to do that. And that is why I think he rarely called timeouts. He wanted the players to figure everything out for themselves. That's bad coaching leadership.

What could Brad Stevens teach him? How to lose your team and watch them tank 4 play off games in a row in ho hum fashion and lose in 2nd round?

Is Boston also Butler University? The high esteem some in Boston hold Brad Stevens is undeserved

Maybe all Pro teams will eventually call the head coach babysitter's. Coaching getting players ready for their next step starts in college. After getting to the next level, there is only one way to stay and play. That is what you learned is practiced.

Used his bench in the most critical moments of the season against the best team in the league? Vs GS?

Who? Derrick White? He was totally tanked offensively in that series by the end, as was Grant Williams, rest of bench was JAGs

Most highly competitive playoff series trend towards shorter benches as the series progresses. This is almost always a universal truth in the NBA.

Maybe they just lost to a better team. This happens too.

All this Celtics talk is so crazy. Yes they are a flawed team. Pretty much all teams are when you aren’t playing against teams with terry Porter or John Starks as your 2nd best player anymore. There is more parity.

also if someone aimed a gun at your head right now and said who is gonna win the most games, playoff series, titles over the next 5 years they’re like 3rd on your list.

Of course Cs lost to Warriors. They finally faced a team that could shoot a basketball straight.

Celtics lost to the Warriors because the Warriors were the better team

Tatum struggled, but what was he going to do? Play Pritchard more? Guy made Jordan Poole look like Michael Jordan

You don't see teams go much more than 7-8 deep in a playoff series, let alone something as high stakes as the Finals.

Derrick White (and Horford) was the reason y'all won 2 instead of 1 game tbh

The best part about the lead up to that series was the narrative that the Celtics were more battle tested than the Warriors

Yeah, taking longer to beat your opponent doesn't make you better lol

Celtics in first Finals as group, Warriors 6th trip in 8 years with their core. Gee, I wonder who is more battle-tested

People using that narrative with Heat this year.

Battle tested and have gone to an NBA Finals previously. Yes Heat completely understand how to get blasted in an NBA Finals in a closed studio set. Should be a large help. ;)
