To do a straight comparison of stats is unfair. Jason Campbell SHOULD have more completions considering the Redskins haven't had a Bye yet and played 9 games. Not only that, but the Giants have brought in the 2nd and 3rd string units in blowout games so far... The Redskins still haven't won a blowout game.
Completions
Eli 153/8 = 19.125
JC 176/9 = 19.55
That means in a short passing west coast offense that even includes garbage yards, JC and Eli Manning have completed the same number of passes in a game. Eli has sat quarters out, and JC has the benefit of garbage yards, yet their numbers are still the same.
Yards
Eli 1735/8 = 216.87
JC 1960/9 = 217.77
The Giants are 7-1 and have been running out leads and Eli has sat out the second half, and he has 1 yard less per game. Eli had his lowest passing total last week (147) while the Giants dominated Dallas 35-14.
Touchdowns
Eli 12/8 = 1.5
JC 8/9 = .88
Eli Manning throws for 3 touchdowns ever 2 games while Campbell doesn't even throw for 1 touchdown per game. Eli Manning also has 1 rushing touchdown, while Campbell has 0. The Giants team in general, has more yards and points than Washington as well.
Interceptions
Eli 5/8 = .625
JC 2/9 = .22
This is where the media and Deadskins fans argue Campbells value. They say that he isn't turnover prone, but then again how could you be when you always opt for that 3 yard checkdown on 3rd and 10? Campbell runs a very low risk shop and have avoided mistakes because he has avoided tough choices. Maybe if he threw the ball downfield more to the right receivers he could have beat Pitt/NY. Gibbs didn't let JC audible last year, and Zorn is keeping him on a tight leash this year. Giving the Skins a lot of draws/screens on long down and distances.
Sacks
Eli 10/8 = 1.25
JC 23/9 = 2.55
Most casual fans think that sacks simply = poor line play but that isn't the case. Eli Manning calls audibles and gets rid of the ball very quickly. He is hard to sack just like his brother Peyton and just like Brady/Romo. These guys aren't mobile but they are smart.
Campbell holds onto the ball too long, and has too long of a release. He isn't quite Leftwhich, but he does have those tendencies. Some of the most mobile quarterbacks are some of the most sacked, Vick, Big Ben, David Carr, Vince Young, these guys hold onto the ball and try and make plays, but end up getting sacked ( and fumble) at a higher rate. Campbell gets sacked much more than Eli, and that is in a 3 and 5 step drop West Coast offense too!
The Skinny: Eli Manning is playing quarterback. He comes up to the line, points out the mike, makes protections for his line, calls audibles for his receivers, and trys to take what the defense is giving him. He will challenge you downfield, he will throw intermediate routes, and he will change pass plays to run plays and vice versa.
Joe Gibbs did not call audibles last year. Gibbs did not trust him and Zorn has given him a little bit more freedom, but not much. So much of the Redskins offense is WR screens, RB screens, and the 5 yard TE drag route to Cooley, that a lot of Campbells numbers are manufactured. If JC for example throws a 1 yard smoke screen to Santana Moss, and he jukes a defender and runs 40 yards, why should we Credit Campbell with a 40 yard pass? Throwing a 15 yard Dig route over the LB and between the DB's is a lot harder to defend.
Jason Campbell has had manufactured numbers much like David Garrard last year, Byron Leftwhich in the past, Jake Plummer in the past and a hand full of other quarterbacks. His numbers look alright, but he was asked to run such a low risk offense, and he does have good talent around him ( that inflate his numbers).
Campbell has been destroyed when he faced solid defenses like the Giants and Pittsburgh. They put pressure on him, and took away the easy plays.
Eli took his bumps and brusies early on in his career, but he was learning. He is and was learning how to WIN games in the NFL. Jason Campbell is the "game manager dejour" who is packed up to look ok thanks to a solid defense, run game, WR and TE. Campbell is actually the weak link on that team and the Deadskins were much better ( and a playoff team) without him.
