It should really be this simple in NFL overtime. You have the ball and the lead- YOU WIN

One had a 50 yard hail Mary to force OT, the other didn't

if they had more time I'm sure they would have scored anyway the way they were moving the ball in the 2nd half..But , Rodgers can make that play, no other QB playing today can... it was right on the money.. it wasn't a freak one handed catch... ball didn't bounce around on some fluke deflection...Janis didn't have to dive for the ball.. It was on the money., right in his hands..what's lucky about that ?

No, that team had a deflected pass in the endzone bounce right into their receivers hands on a play that should have included offensive pass interference. Not to mention Shields dropped an INT that would've prevented that TD from ever happening. I honestly hope you aren't as dumb as you seem on this forum.

I think they should do OT just like NBA does. That's what makes the most sense to me. Play 5 minute quarters till someone wins.

For serious? That might be the dumbest thing I've ever heard you say. :)

Too big of a chance for one team to win the flip and go on a 5 minute drive, kick a FG at the buzzer. Not equitable at all.

The new rule is a vast improvement over the old sudden death, but the OP suggestion makes it even better. It will change to this someday soon.

Full disclosure I had AZ -1 in a teaser and o42.5 in a separate teaser - and I hate the packers - so the result last night was perfect for me. Not sour grapes, but the rule should be changed.

College overtime is perfect

No it's not. Letting teams start from the 25 just takes too much away from the "full game plan" such that it is not an accurate representation of a team's entire skillset.

For example, teams that are really good at taking deep shots don't get to use that advantage. Teams that are good at defense between the 20's vs teams that excel in the red zone. That kinda thing.

Teams that have a better FG kicker have a better advantage. Going 2nd in any individual OT is too big of an advantage. And the automatic going for 2 thing is dumb and overly-complicated.

It's fine how it is now.. The way offenses have evolved, and defendes have been neutered, and kickers (generally) are better than ever, I can agree that a fg shouldn't end game on first possession. But defense is part of the game, so if you don't like losing on first possession, don't give up a td.

I'm not totally opposed to leaving it the way it is...I can see an adjustment , but not hell bent on it....

Here is my OT Rules.

Each team must have one offensive touch.
Team 1 get possesion of the ball kicks a field goal. Team 2 get their turn MUST score TD to win.
Team 1 scores TD and extra point. Team 2 MUst play for win by scoring TD and 2 Pt conversion.

In other words each team gets possesion of the ball but you cannot play for a tie.

Man, I thought Reno's 5-minute quarter idea was bad. This is just straight retarded.

Really? You like special teams or skills competitions deciding games? Maybe not a 5 minute quarter, but perhaps full quarters till someone wins. But I'd rather it be representative of the game.

And college football OT rules are the worst. It's like a shoot out deciding the Stanley Cup.

I know what you mean. It seems like they should play full field for at least a posession each and then go to the short field maybe.
But lets give the NFL credit when they do somehting right. The overtime thing in the NFL is just about right the way it is. I feel like they did their homework on this and made a distinction where the FG is too easy for the team rcvng kick. If they can move it 80 yds or appx. that is worth giving that team the victory. Bifore this it felt like team rcvng would get FG like 80% of the time and everyone was saying if yo uwin the coin toss you will win the game.

Ok I see your point. How about fair up till someone wins, like baseball.

The rule should be changed so that OT is 15 minutes; if still tied, another 15 and so forth. Postseason only, of course.
