Is it really true that Las Vegas will NEVER have a professional sports team to call its own?

There is no territory rights 4 hours away in another state. Not to mention on local TV the teams shown vary all the time, often it seems from season to season. The Giants and Angels get the most coverage, with the Dodgers on Fox Sports.

GreenDoberman -- I think a stadium would fit there (might need to be a steep incline to the nosebleed seats, but I'm sure they'd make it work). As for parking, Bally's and Paris garages are right there, and I'm sure they'd buy up some of that land back there if needed. Besides, I think a lot of people would arrive by taxi or the monorail which has a stop at Bally's within a baseball's throw of the stadium.

So you really think a team in the near future is a possibility! that would be very nice to do before I head to Piero's.

My first guess is that it's still a few years down the road...but will get more and more likely as the population here grows, the U.S. as a whole continues to get more accepting of commercial gaming, and the economics get too attractive for an owner to pass up.

As I sort of mentioned above, Phoenix was not considered a "major-league city" for a long time. Then someone saw the untapped market and the Suns were born and they ruled the city as the only game in town...and then that led to the Cardinals, Coyotes and finally Diamondbacks coming to town. I can see the same thing happening in Vegas (with the exception of the NFL).

Vegas once had the greatest professional sports team..The Computer..they could throw the bomb, run it up, hit the middle, score big when the buzzer sounded, & run the reverse like nobody ever has or ever will...just kidding.

I, one day see LV with possibly an NBA team, especially if UNLV Hoops continues to falter(as college ball doesn't appeal to all, even when it's a winner), and due to the NBA being a bit less rigid than MLB or the NFL in puritanical forms, also due to the raised attendance & population/demographic demands of the NFL & MLB in needing bigger markets.

With Az D-backs and LAD within proximity, you can bet that MLB, with an office that has had it's fill with gambling related matters, will not come calling.

With the NFL need to get a new stadium for Super Bowls back into the warm weather of the nation's #2 market, it's assured that LA will be the NFL's next expansion city..even if LA fans will show up late and leave early to catch the finish of Rams and Raiders games on the dish.

LV would show up 70K strong for an NFL team, yet the NFL would keep a team like the Cards in a town like Phoenix, just because it's a fast-rising #4 market in the US(regardless if they like football or not), and play the gambling card as an alibi..what a shame.

Even if LV didn't support teams the way a city of 1 million should, the sheer volume of tourism alone would guarantee that any venture by major pro sports would thrive.

Then again the leagues don't want a home team to have fans erupt in jubilation as the home team scores a "hail mary" to backdoor the number as the clock expires on a tv loss, nor have NFL Films show the massive garbage of torn and tossed Sportbook tickets flying, as the backbreaker bomb versus LV puts the game on ice.

There isn't any more betting on local teams than there is for other games. Most books will tell you they do write a few more smaller tickets on the games, probably an indication of local interest, but the fact is half the people are just as likely to bet against the home team as road team. The fans here, I suspect, could be notoriously fickle and could just as likely think the home team will suck and bet against them as they would bet blindly on them. I do have to say Vegas has a fairly informed square crowd. No they aren't winners, but they are far more balanced than you will see in other places I have lived. If the local team or the team they like faces a game they don't think they will win, they will gladly go against them or at least say it like it is. In other towns if that were the case, the local square would say "hmm 49ers got a tough game this weekend" and just not bet it, even if he damn well knew they would get beat and he could make money betting the other team.

So you think the NBA is most liberal? I heard the opposite.

Dalki, Stern keeps a PC front, but seems to have some of the most liberal policies in terms of self-regulation, and besides the NHL..has the game in the most dangerous financial spot of major sports & their futures..cable contracts & tv dollars saving the NBA.

Also LV's extreme heat, makes the indoor sports actually a better bet, not lesser, as any LV team despite the lack of precipatation, will certainly need to be in the AC, and preferably demanding only 17K to 20K attendance.

If I were other owners in the league when the vote came, I would vote "nay" to LV, in fear of long-distance trippers(like Cub fans to Wrigley, or Mountain folks to Bronco games) always bypassing my town for a weekend to LV to see my team that is just 100 miles down the seaboard,etc..plus the mentioned Free Agency attraction for the NBA's notorious players of the night.

NBA's tv viewership is in the toilet, as fans can't stand poor fundamentals, off-court turnoffs, and the instability of talent, be it coaching or players.

I would say LV is still a longshot, but 4 to 5 years from now, the league may have no other choice for fresh blood..expansion or relocation?

I can't see the NFL or MLB ever touching LV with a ten foot pole, due to the market's demographics & gambling fear issues.
