Is it dumb to try and sell this?

Where do the numbers come from? Or rather, what do they mean?

Numerous sources and scouting reports as well as my personal opinion. They just show what pitches are in a guy's arsenal and how effective each of them are. The higher the rating (100 is the cap) for each pitch, the better the pitch.

I'm also going to add the % of times the pitcher throws each pitch to get a real good idea of what guys pitch alike.

I guess my point is I'm not sure what purpose the numbers serve... they don't seem to be quantifiable, comparing one to another doesn't really help us do anything?

If a team has 3 games where they don't hit Gavin Floyd, Gil Meche, and Jeremy Guthrie (all throw the same 4 pitches and are rated fairly close), then odds are the matchup against Jake Westbrook next time out (another guy with the same 4-pitch arsenal with roughly the same effectiveness of the other 3) won't result in much better results for the team that struggles against that type of pitcher.

Well they help if you compare them with the offense of the opposing team or at least of the key 2 or 3 players. For instance, Lance Berkman has never seen a curveball that he could hit.

Well if the pitcher throws predominately slow stuff, then the Astros would not be a great play.

I happen to know almost all of that information, but I would rate it as being worth around $20. Anyone who is going to handicap for the first 43 weeks of the season could make great use out of this information

That's what I was thinking but no one seems to think it's worth anything so I'm leaning toward just giving the sucker away to RX members at this point. Oh well, it will help me win cash at MLB this season at least so I'll make money from it that way.

Weird thing I noticed... everyone of the Royals' starting 5 throws the same 4 pitches. Greinke is obviously a stud and Meche has 2 pitches that are a little better then Davies, Bannister, and Hochevar but this team seems like the type of squad that will either dominant a series or have issues. Information like that is valuable IMO.

There have been probably 10 hours+ into this thing. At the least. I did it for myself though and have no problem spending time on something to help me win cash.

Jake, hope I dont come across as a dick when I say this but what makes your opinions on the numbers of any value or accuracy? Are you able to analyze each pitchers repitoire of pitches? And further are you able to compare them against one another with any accuracy?

While I think its effective for capping to know each pitcher and their pitches, your ratings mean little if anything.

Again, not trying to be a dick, just think you might be wasting your time

Here is a better way to express my point. You gave the example of the following pitchers

Well said. This information is readily available from people/web sites that actually know what they're doing (ie: scouting ratings don't go to 100 - you'll never see a scout evaluate a player or pitch that way). Its a nice idea, but once you put your own opinions into it and use ratings like a video game it becomes useless.

Well if you want credentials...

Leading the same challenge in year 2 when I left the site halfway through the season

Those aren't the end all and I could very well end up losing cash this year after all my talk but I feel confident that I know more about these ratings then 99.9% of the population. It's up to you guys whether to believe me or not.

Mine don't go to 100. The most I have it 95 and it's super rare.

Also, there may be websites out there but none that have all this information at one place, especially in such an easy to read format. You could go to 5 or 6 websites and dick around and find this stuff but it would be a pain in the ass to do for every matchup every day, plus everything is in one easy database here.

95 = elite
90 = well above average
85 = a "plus pitch"
80 = usuable
75 = average
70 = below average
65 or lower = not something that should be thrown

Those are about how my ratings go.

Now thats not exactly what you wanted to know in the original post, which is the one I was addressing. You asked if you were dumb to try and sell this and based on the fact that these stats largely represented your opinions (even though you are more qualified then most)...then yes, you are dumb to try and sell it.

Now if you are using this info you have put together to cap and make your bets then it could be a good handicapping tool for YOU.

Two completely different situations. I'm sure you'll be very successful this season and maybe even win a fantasy baseball league or two. As far as selling this info, again, dont think there is much value/market for it
