Yeah....40 proof wine? Holy shit

Damn right that will tear you up.

closer to a well shot of cheap spirits than a wine, IMO.

Most likely like grape Kool-ade mixed with $8 a liter vodka at 50/50.

Yep. Ever heard of Sam Adams Utopias?

Never heard of it. I know there are some beers(barleywines) that can run about 20 proof. Shit tastes like a strong beer with a couple shots of cough syrup in it. Can't stand the crap.

Utopias is 50 proof. Strongest beer in the world...

Never had it, but it came to mind when I opened this thread.

I think everyone has heard of the Irish Poteen which if from a good source is one of the best Spirits in the World but its not always made properly by Jokers here. :drink:

I've heard of the Irish Potofgold. Does that count? BTW that explains
why it's not koshur there, besides the IRA chasing, hence madgasca ;

20% holy $hit

had one a few weeks back that was like 16.5% and could tell the difference ... 20% is probably pure swill

as far as the other poster with the beer = 3-5% ??? maybe whores light or miller, but "real" beer is always at least 5.5% ... good stuff like Piraat and Karmeliet are in the 10% range

One way to judge a great wine is by it's alcohol content. Really fine wines are usually in the 14 % range. Most cheaper wines will be in the 12 to lower 13 % range. 20 % is not a wine by anyone's measuring gauge. Most likely it is a Port or Tawny Port ! Good Tawny Port can be 10,20,30 or 40 years aged. Price can start at $ 30+ up to $ 150 for a 30 or 40 year Port like Taylors Fladgate ! This stuff is fantastic but it's not made to gulp down. Usually served in a tiny glass about the size of a shot glass. $ 15. dollars a shot glass is what We paid in San Francisco for 30 year Tawny Port ! 20 % alcohol content is the most common percentage.

There may be some classy strong wines, but usually high alcohol "fortified" wines are cheap, awful, and made to get drunk ( and hung over).

Typically you have to be in a bad place to even buy Boone's Farm or MD 20-20. It's kind of an inner city urban thing, really, like Colt45, Olde English, cheap Gin and Cognac, etc.

Tonight i picked up a bottle of the aforementioned Australian wine.
10 bucks a pop. 725 ml, 13.5% happy juice. Dry like rain. Bitter
like the port, so again diluted with 50% grape juice. Much better
that way. Will see how much it takes to get "stoned" on this stuff
tonight, as i just started in on a glass.

Math question: Is there better value with the Portugeese Port at
$14, 375 Ml and 20% alc, or with the Aussie Wine at $10, 750 Ml
and 13.5% alc? IOW, which gives me more alcohol for my loonie?
