Lawmakers are once again fast-tracking a bill that could discourage Indiana companies from mandating COVID-19 vaccines, even as those in the business community and health experts are pleading with them to hit the brakes. In a rare move, and in a sign Republicans want to pass the bill quickly, lawmakers heard testimony in a committee Thursday, instead of waiting until they reconvene in January.
They also must give employees the choice to get tested weekly on the employer's dime instead of vaccinated. Likewise, businesses would have to allow exemptions for those employees who had recovered from COVID-19 in the prior six months, due to the evidence of COVID antibodies after infection.
Some changes have been made to the proposal since lawmakers attempted a one-day session. The current version no longer includes exemptions for pregnant people and the updated bill will likely codify some pandemic measures that made it easier for providers with out-of-state licenses and those who have retired to return to health care, Lehman said.
Likewise, Lehman said they are looking at potential punishments for employers who do not follow state law after the bill passes, and ways to clarify what costs employers are responsible for when it comes to COVID testing.
