Yankees will explore trade options at third
July 25, 2012 by Brien Jackson
It isn’t exactly surprising to see reporters speculating about the Yankees making a trade to replace the injured
Alex Rodriguez, and that’s exactly what’s happened this morning. The Yankees
have even been tied to San Diego’s
Chase Headley, the top available player at the position on the market. It’s obvious enough that the Yankees will cast about to see what they can pick up, but I would probably urge tempering any expectations in this regard. It hasn’t been confirmed that A-Rod will be out for the entire season yet, and the Yankees will certainly be hoping to get him back sometime in September. With that in mind, picking up a long term option like Headley will both require a pretty hefty price to be paid in exchange, and would entail some changes to the roster going forward, namely making A-Rod a full time DH. If anything does happen via trade, I would expect the Yankees to pick up a stopgap like
Marco Scutaro on the cheap. Remember,
Eric Chavez has already been a regular player for the Yankees in a platoon role and has been quite productive doing so, so that’s the baseline the Yankees are starting from here.
