The cards you get are included in the 'luck' portion of poker, which is almost certainly only a short-term influence. No different than making bets on teams and finding that they're above expectations.

Only skill is involved in better? Almost certainly over the longrun, but the problem is your example of poker vs betting compares a short-term example with a long-term example, which is like comparing apples to oranges.

The cards only matter in the short-term, as in the longrun you will almost certainly get a reasonable distribution of hands and community cards.

In the long run, luck is not even relevant.

On the hand Yang won the World Series with he went all in with an 8-8 and his opponent had an A-Q. Preflop he is in the lead. This is not luck.

This is him going all in with the best hand and it takes skill to read your opponent well enough to know when to go all in with the best hand. Essentially his opponent at this point has 6 outs to beat him. I'll take those odds any day and it takes skill to put yourself in that postion for that much money.

Assuming a heads up situation all in pre flop 88 v AQ is about 55/45

I generally participate in a lot less than 25% of the action.
