Are you at an age where you still feel able to continue posting faster speeds (for whatever distance)?

I run everyday, but I am weird I don't time myself anymore. I have posted some real good times in 5ks, 10ks, 15ks, and 10 milers in the past but I found myself struggling when I did a half marathon 2 years ago and lost interest for awhile after that. I am back into running now but I am nowhere near the runner I used to be. My legs hurt constantly now. I have not yet ran a full marathon yet, but maybe if I get back to the form I used to be in it i'll give it a shot. In 2007 I ran in 42 road races. My best finish was in a 10k when I came in 2nd place.

Thanks for the explanation. I figure there's a number of different motivators for being involved in running specific distances and speed is only one.

I myself have been tinkering with initiating a running program (age 49 and in pretty balanced physical shape) and I'm inclined to believe that after a period of time establishing the habit I would be interested in times - within reason and with respect to my not being college age.

Sure. If you start running there is no doubt after a certain amount of time you will want to start setting PR's. It's definitely a sport I wish I would have gotten into when I was in grade school/ high school so I would have had a better idea of how to improve, but either way competitive or not I just love lacing them up and going for a run. Its a stress reliever, it keeps you in shape, and I love the alone time.

I never thought of being a runner due to the Texas heat. Take today for example it is 100 degrees and humidity is around 94% feels like 107. I guess you really have to like running if you went for a 5k jog today. Maybe if I lived in the great north or east coast i would feel different.

 There was a funny little piece in Maxim last month about this as a career field. 78 million cash-lined baby boomers left, roll in caddys, wear sleek black gangsta suits, and stop traffic whenever you want. downside, creeping out every women that you meet.
