I wonder if the boycotts will spill across other sports?

Obviously the star players have the power. No one pays money too see the owners or the coaching staff.

If you guys don't care about players then you should have been watching the XFL.

The players make the sport not the other way around. Otherwise you would see countless football, basketball leagues etc succeeding.

I’m selfish for the NFL due to the big overlay contest $$$ in Vegas, could give a shit about the NBA or MLB

Can you imagine if the Chiefs boycott their game in 2 or so weeks? Or Alabama not taking the field at the end of September? It's not as far fetched as it sounds.

The actions this evening are not boycotts

They are actually wildcat strikes by organized union members

'Boycott' is the thing many big mouth trump cultists threaten - such as pledging to never again watch the NFL - but never truly follow through on

Meanwhile it should be reminded that within this unfortunately almost dead website there will be approx 20 men who declare their POV as empirical among "real Americans" and who will denounce all public assembly to express social grievances as "riots"

About half that many - maybe ten men - will offer a tired rebuttal

And most remarkable, about a dozen will create ten, twenty, thirty, 100+ new Thread titles to repeat the same declarations

It will be good to see major sports return sometime in 2021 or hopefully no later than 2022

Frankly not sure this site survives until then

8pm EDT and there are "37 members" on OS forum and less than 20 of those have I ever seen post

I confess my own participation is likely a futile and hopeless dream this site will ever again be a true common ground for trading useful info on SPORTS

best of luck to the couple dozen of you who just can't stop rewriting the same arguments

Trading sports information will never come back here. Those posters simply no longer exist on this forum....About 3/4 of the members claim to not even watch sports. Or they claim to watch NHL or golf but those people who claim that never actually post any information about those sports.

3/4 of the traffic is also generated with a back and forth with a single poster, the fact that i don't even need to mention his name for everyone too know who i am talking about pretty much sums it up. ;)

I mean at one time this site was the sports equivalent of poker on twoplustwo. Poker has gotten smaller and that site sill flourishes, this site went down quickly after the Shrink passed away and got run poorly, which is unfortunate.

These guys are self destructing their own league. The ratings are already down and this will alienate more viewers. Do they not understand the basic economics of generating revenue for their own company?

Yes. Basketball will cease to exist or the players will start making a max. of 1 million dollars a year. Jeesh. This argument is rehashed over and over again yet without fail revenue and salaries continue to rise.

Hoping for something and reality are two different things, maybe one day you will learn the difference. Or get an infinity stone. Yes, without betting on sports i actually sat down and watched a movie.

Who said basketball will cease to exist? Why do you always make stuff up that nobody said?

"destructing their own league" I'm sorry but what did this mean, that revenues and salary continue to rise? Is that what you meant by "destructing their own league"

You think in 3 years players will be making less? Perhaps next year they will because of covid and fans not being permitted but the players are in no way destructing their own league.

I just enjoy your arguments. Probably after you married your wife and someone said, "I am glad you found someone you loved" you replied "when did i ever say i loved her?"

It means the players and league keep doing things that turn viewers away from watching their sport. The ratings are down and there's a reason for that. You don't see that?

You do this a lot here. You say posters say things or you interpret things they say when they literally don't say it. You just make stuff up.

Depends how far they're willing to go. I don't think they're gonna change the league financials too badly by sitting out a few games or putting word salad and platitudes on their jersies.

But if they wanna truly have uncomfortable conversations as a sports league, I think that will probably not be a boon for their finances and likely hurt it.

Although, I've said a ton of times on here, I think this is more of a tough issue for the NFL to deal w/ than NBA as it has way more white, conservative fans.

The reason they aren't really taking any hit financially is because the people who ran their leagues basically know where the line is, for the most part.

It might but I don’t see football players being unified enough. No way Brady misses a chance to try and get sb 7. Players have far more power than they realize. Those stating to get new players, who really wants to watch guys who couldn’t make it play for real?

You know as well as i do that people have short memories. I just can't imagine a few years from now a segment of people saying "i stopped watching the NBA when they stopped playing in the bubble and never went back" Just never going to happen in my opinion. Now could it turn a segment of people away for the rest of this year, that's a possibility, but what small fraction will that cost with the few games remaining. Plus i think most of that was already baked into how the NBA chose to re-start.

People will bitch and moan about the NFL also, and like clock work it will be a money making machine like all professional sports in the USA. But for those that just want to watch NHL and golf, more power to you, it's noble work you're doing, on whose behalf, uncertain.

Yes. If Cowboy players choose to kneel for anthem this season though, Jerry will definitely not interfere.

There is no reason to play a national anthem at a sporting event outside the Olympics. NFL should scrap it this season. Military people who get upset, tell them to kick rocks and be more concerned with soldiers being raped and killed on base by fellow soldiers. If they really feel the need they may as well learn the Chinese anthem since they will be running world a lot sooner than expected.

Athletes can quit doing their job all they want.

1) Other athletes will gladly take their place.
2) What they do off the court, field, etc is their business.
3) Inside the structures of their employers they are employees. As such it is perfectly acceptable for their employers to demand performance or terminate.
4) No matter how many police officer involved shooting occur cops are still going to carry guns and still shoot when they feel like the person they are shooting is a danger to others.

Next man up. Fire their asses if they walk off the field. These children wanna take a knee, keep them in the locker room. Fans dont want to see this shit or frankly care what an entertainment worker has an opinion on.

As long as the superstars are the ones leading the message none of the above will happen. And as for ratings? The fans won't be missed who leave the sport. They're far outnumbered by the ones who care about the sport along with the new generation. NBA post season ratings have been at its highest since 2007. The majority of fans aren't going anywhere. Advertising revenue by the NBA is a cash printing machine with advertising dollars, merchandise and tickets. Fans are still buying the jerseys, companies are still writing blank checks for ad space during the playoffs. Sure tickets sales are down because of Covid, but has anyone tried buying a ticket during the post season?

Fans aren't going anywhere. The sport has global appeal. How could you not know that already? And neither are the corporations. The fans who do vacate the sport because of player behavior won't be missed and easily are replaced 10 times over.
