I am for tipping. But modern day tipping is not the same as before. People in this service industry now believe that they are entitled to get tipped regardless of the quality of the service. Business should never under pay or pay below minimum to employees because of tips. Expecting 15 to 25% tip on all bill is ridiculous. I have tipped 15 to 25% on big bills when i really appreciated the service but it shouldn't be expected. For example, if I go to the restaurant and order $800 bottle of wine and ate food worth $150.....tipping 15 to 20% on that bill shouldn't be expected....it is completely up to the customer if he wants to tip that much. But now a days I have seen servers calling out celebs/athletes for tipping $100 to $150 on $3000+ bill on social media. I think it is ridiculous. I spent $1k in restaurant or bar, I wouldn't tip more than $50 unless the host/server was genuinely nice and provided excellent/friendly service.

If I am doing well I tip (I am only in Vegas once a year max though so go big or go home). If they are dicks I don't, that goes for any service type job. But I wouldn't tip to GET drink tickets would just go buy my own (has to be close to a wash I would think of tipping to get a free drink???). I have only got drink tickets once or twice and I usually wager fairly large

tatehill no one dismantled my argument.

Show me any tipping etiquette article that says to tip the person scanning your items at the grocery store. Now if they offer to take out the groceries to your car, then you tip that person.

Next thing you'll tell me that we should tip the truck driver that bring gas to the pumps because without him there wouldn't be any gas.....

You probably go up to the counter thinking your entitled to drink tickets because you bet $2 to show on the 1/9 favorite.

This isn't the old days where drink tickets flow like a faucet. The bean counters put in place a minimum and it varies from location. In all my time, I guess I've been fortunate, I've never ran into a grumpy, mean, non talkative ticket writer. Then again, I am usually wagering separately from the every day bettors based upon what I bet. I am fortunate where I can risk a lot more and it doesn't mean much if I lose. I just don't make a big deal of it except when that Mogley scam artist thought there was no way the Steelers would lose to the Patriots and he wanted to book my action. I said it to him then, he couldn't afford my action and time proved he was what I said he was early on a scammer.

Back to tipping...……… if you ever expect anything in a tipping industry, you have to pay the price or be happy with what you get. Greasing palms is still alive and well. That won't change now or ever. One last thing, always tip the poker dealer accordingly.

You are basing your argument on tipping articles? Do you have a bunch printed out, and carry them on you?

TIPS - To insure prompt service

I use to work in the service industry - Was trained in a 5 star resort in Ontario where tipping was not allowed and a service charge was added to the bill shared by all the staff. From time to time a guest would leave some extra $$ behind. Sometimes they would leave a penny - This was sign ( from the old british club system) that you gave good service. At the end of each quarter the resort would pay us our tips in a lump some based on the hours we worked, we would all go out and get drunkkkkkkk.

Those were good times, I actually lived on the resort property for 2 years before moving west. When I got out west I used serving to support myself through University - Both my parents were gone so I did it all myself, I took some student loans to pay for Books & classes. But the rest of my expenses were paid out of pocket from my tips and wages.

I side with Hot Pizza on his comments, here is generally how I tip.

10% for just service - Coffee counter, server going through the motions, cabbies, Barbers......keep in mind in a restaurant the servers also tip out the Bar, kitchen, hosts and bussers - good teamwork should be rewarded
15% for genuinely friendly & timely service
20% for good recommendations + the above

Hotel Staff such as doormen, porters , maids, concierges fall into a different category for me I usually tip at the end of my stay except for the doorman who bring the luggage up

To Answer the question - I tip the ticket window both coming and going it feels good - I know they appreciate it they always say so. I also tip the dealers when I leave the table too. Both those jobs are thankless jobs and they have to professional at all times

I feel very fortunate to be where I am in life, a couple of wrong decisions could have sent me down a very different path. I have no problem tipping people who are professional, trying hard and making a positive experience for me in the moment.

I'm a tipping addict, I have to hide my tips from my wife, I tend to sneak in something extra

If service really fucking sucks and I'm pissed about it, something very rare, I'll still leave 15%
