Doesn't know cursive writing. How is this possible I asked him. He said they didn't teach it at his school. What?!

He has to be lying right? They still teach cursive writing in school I'm sure. I questioned him further. How do you sign your name? I print it he replies. This kid has got to be pulling my leg.

He goes on to say that handwriting is stupid anyways and that especially for doctor's prescriptions and other things it's better if handwriting be completely eradicated. Cause from person to person it's so difficult to read at times.

I know a lot of kids are doing their homework on ipads or laptops etc but they must still be required to learn handwriting right?

It exercises the brain and it's better for taking notes in college rather than printing.

I still don't know if this kid was just playing. I know the schools today are focusing on technology skills for kids. Using computers and other devices but there must be a place for handwriting? Or maybe handwriting is a thing of the past where it was convenient at the time giving the tools we had at our disposal. Or Didn't have.

I don't know. Apparently there's many people, even young adults that don't know how to handwrite.

It's strange to me.

Random thought. Who cares I guess.

I guess that's one less way a criminal will get caught these days. Can't determine anything by their handwriting if all the threatening letters, ransom notes etc were typed out.

I heard a while back schools are slowly phasing out cursive.

I suppose the theory is that that handwriting in general will continue to fade in the future..

my kids, age 10 and 12, don't get taught cursive where we live (east coast of Florida)

I get that us older people hear that and think its insane and dumb but the more I think about it why does it matter. How often do any of us need to write in cursive in 2018? I almost never write in cursive. The only exception is signing my name on a check or loan ect.

i met a 18 year old that knew how to balance a checkbook, to me that is more amazing.

cursive has been getting fazed out though and honestly even though it sucks i can understand how there isnt enough time to teach that along with other things. id rather them save music and other arts programs before handwriting but thats me. there are skills that need to be taught at the high school level that would better teach kids for the real world, basic financial management and understanding credit would be the first that come to mind.

Besides my name, I haven’t written in cursive since the 3rd grade when I was forced to. Even now my signatures like a hybrid of cursive and print. My daughter starts 2nd grade next year, that’s when they started teaching it when I went. I don’t think they do anymore which I don’t have an issue with . I hated it back than and I still hate it now lol.. when she starts doing that new weird math, now that’s a whole other story

It makes sense, cursive is essentially useless. Why teach kids something they don't need to ever use other then reading old time letters or documents. As time goes on I could see a world where you don't need to write at all , just typing and touch screens and voice to text . Further further down the road with AI improvements voice to text can be overtaken by the brain and eye movement to text. Sort of like the stuff used by paralyzed people to use the computer.

I have to agree, with the way the world is, it is crazier that someone doesn't know how to type than not knowing cursive.

Private schools probably more likely to still teach it nowadays in most states. Not sure how many public schools across the country that teach it still

handwriting, cursive learning is a fundamental element of learning. It exercises/stimulates your brain in a psico-motor way in which nothing else will, and you are less talented or creative for it, can be proven scientifically ....

It must be kept in the elementary system. Yet another idiot move will fade it out claiming no need for it. So one holocaust away from leaving so many dumb asses in the way....

I think there's a certain elegance in handwriting. You aren't going to write a love letter by printing it. You aren't going to sign your name by printing it. But I understand that these aren't enough reasons to keep it. There's tight budgets in schools.

Still, I think they should teach it. As somebody mentioned it stimulates your brain in a different way than learning printing.

Also, I think I read somewhere that it helps some kids with certain learning disabilities.

I just think it's a shame. I do agree learning how to type and be proficient using computer programs/software is much more important.

My handwriting has degenerated so poorly that I can't use it. I had a teacher in junior high in the sixties that tried to teach penmanship and had a textbook to try to improve cursive writing. It didn't help me. I failed that class. It's so bad now that I struggle to sign my name. No problem with block lettering only cursive. Once you get past a certain point in your life you can't improve it so it gets worse with age. I've had DMV and other places that need my signature give me grief. I write almost no checks due to automatic withdrawal.

Writing in cursive is like 10x faster than printing. It is not useless.

Typing over cursive is how many times faster?

Unfortunately, that is what the world is coming to. You don't even need to type these days, you can just speak and the computer/phone/program will write the words for you.

I think the only time that i have written cursive in the past 20 years was to sign my name.

However that is an IMPORTANT feature that we all MUST know how to do.

Look i get most of us are old and shit now but lets face it. writing in cursive is useless. Nobody does it pretty much ever at this point. How about we teach kids shit that actually matters in school like basic fucking finances so they don't all have debt to their eyeballs when they are 30. Just cause the bank will approve you for a 400k house doesn't mean you should buy one.

Handwriting got worse over time? I've never heard of this and don't understand it. I thought it was like riding a bike. Once you know it you know it. Doesn't get better, doesn't get worse. Strange but interesting.

Oh right, that's another thing. Writing checks. I have a small side business in landscaping and I write a lot of checks. That requires handwriting too. Or you should. It's more difficult to forge. I use cursive writing for the whole check not just signing my name.

So strange that your handwriting got worse over time. I don't understand it.
