Any decent sized online book has a 20k telecomunications cost (fixed cost) before they take a bet. Any business working on margins of less than 5% would have one helluva a time making it in the States with normal telecommunication costs let alone in Costa Rica, Jamaica, or Dominican Republic where those costs are absurd and the service mediocre at best. Throw that in with the other costs Dannymay mentioned plus CHARGEBACKS/SCAMS/BONUS WHORES etc. and its tough to break even let alone earn.

SHERMAN.............first of all

sharps, wiseguys and sydnicates (groups of people that pool money together to bet)

are a major force in sports betting......yes the win on a consistant basis......but unlike most gamblers they are in this for the long haul.......

in a nutshell.......the majority of offshore books that go under are run by people who dont have a clue when it comes to bookmaking........

I used to own a bookies in London Uk and it's not an easy business - your fixed costs - staffing, satellite & information feeds, utility bills, advertising etc are high and you need the turnover and profitability on turnover to make it pay. That's not easy when there is so much competition around. A lot of these books offering all these bonuses don't know what they're doing and many will go bust - so one bit of advice "if it looks too good it probably is and expect to lose your funds at one stage"

sherman,

If both the bookie and the player are sharp, the bookie will win.

But not all bookies are sharp. Many make mistakes. And sharp players look for those mistakes, capitalize on them, and win. A slow line move is an example. News comes in about an injury and most bookmakers immediately move the line by 3 points, say. But there will always be some sleepyhead out there who still has the old line and thousands of dollars get bet with a huge advantage. Of course it's still no guarantee but if the bookie does that often enough he will lose his shirt. The juice can cover a 1 point bad line but it's not enough to cover 3 points.

Is it getting clearer now?

Yes Daryl it is, I guess I just had a hard time believing that a point swing is that HUGE. I know of course it is sometimes a factor, but I thought it would even out in the long run, therefore favoring the book. Hey, I'm learning alot here, I will continue...

My question has been the opposite. How do these online books stay in business with all the expenses talked about in this thread?

Cheers

Las Vegas books stay in business because they
bring high rollers into the casino. The Las
Vegas books have had rough seasons. They also
have an unlimited bankroll which offshores do not have. They don't give away a cent in bonuses. Stations Casinos run a huge football contest. They don't make any money on it because they pay out what they take in but they get thousands of suckers playing parlay cards when they drop off their entry. That's basically what the books want suckers playing parlay cards. Only advantage to Las Vegas books. You will get paid and once in a while they give you a free drink.
