LEGOs for girls has feminist group in a twist

A feminist group has identified the enemy, and it is ... LEGOs?
The Danish company behind the interlocking plastic building blocks loved by children since 1949 has a meeting set for Friday with a Brooklyn group ticked off with LEGOs product line designed to appeal to girls.
The new “LEGO Friends” rolled out in December featuring LadyFigs, curvier takeoffs on the traditional boxy LEGO men. Construction sets include a hot tub, a splash pool, a beauty parlor, an outdoor bakery and a “cool convertible," as well as an inventor's workshop.
But the SPARK Movement objects to the "LadyFigs," the female version of the little figures who man the spaceships, trucks and forts children create. "Ladyfigs" are somewhat anatomically correct, which hypersexualizes girls, according to the group.
"They have little breasts and they have fancy hair," the organization's executive director, Dana Edell, told FoxNews.com. "And it just disturbs us that this is the image that they want girls to see."
Edell also objects to what she calls stereotyping of preferred pastimes for girls.
"What it's doing is telling girls that this is what's important to you," Edell said of the beauty parlor and hot tub sets. "Girls aren't building space shuttles, they're getting their nails done."
But not everyone thinks LEGOs for girls should have parents ready to snap.
"They have little breasts and they have fancy hair ... it just disturbs us that this is the image that they want girls to see."
- Dana Edell, SPARK Movement

Dr. Leonard Sax, author of "Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex Differences," said gender differences are natural, and that while some girls may prefer traditional LEGOs, there is nothing wrong with the company offering what it sees as a girl-friendly version.
According to Sax, even animals in the wild show differences along gender lines from the earliest ages.
"These particular women's groups are disconnected from reality in their desire to promote the idea that these gender differences are taught by the patriarchy or through socialization," Sax, who also authored "Boys Adrift" and "Girls on the Edge," told FoxNews.com. "The sexualization of children is indeed an important issue, but this is not a part of that."
Edell's group has gotten 55,000 signatures as of Thursday decrying the gender-specific LEGO sets. That was enough to leverage a meeting with top LEGO executives in Manhattan at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
"We agreed to a private meeting with the organization upon their request to hear their feedback on our new product line," LEGO Systems Brand Relations Director Michael McNally told FoxNews.com. "We value external perspectives -- critical or complimentary -- as inspiration for exploring development of the LEGO brand."
But the company may listen more closely to customers than critics. McNally said the girl-targeted line is selling well, and generating positive feedback from parents.
Others told FoxNews.com they were puzzled why some oppose the toymaker's decision to provide a more diverse product line.
"I understand that they're offended by the limited, old-fashioned way in which LEGO has feminized the new line -- with traditional feminine characters and colors -- but they should embrace the fact that LEGO is providing new choices for families and children," said Nicole Ciandella, whose blog, Free-MarketFeminism.com, regularly takes on issues like gender, politics and economics.
"SPARK seems to oppose any expression of traditional, old-fashioned femininity, but why? Shouldn't parents have the option of purchasing toys that express traditional masculinity, traditional femininity, and everything in between?"
LEGO isn't suggesting that girls be limited to playing with traditionally-feminine toys, but is instead giving parents options, Ciandella said.
"The beauty of the free market is that it enables consumers to make their own choices about the environments they wish to create in their own homes."
Edell, meanwhile, said she's looking forward to telling LEGO executives to better focus their efforts to producing toys that expands the "mind and creativity" of girls and boys alike.
"Our world has become more and more sexualized," Edell said. "And the toy industry has become that way as well."

9-year-old fights back against alleged bully, gets suspended

The anti-bullying techniques taught at Colorado's West Elementary School apparently weren't enough to keep one 9-year-old from being tormented regularly. Third-grader Nathan Pemberton fought back and now has been suspended. "One kid kicked me in the back, then punched me in the face. Then I punched him in the face, and then I got in trouble," he said. Nathan claims little action was taken when he told teachers about the bully in the past. The school, which states it has a "no-tolerance" discipline policy, says violence is violence and that Nathan has to pay the price. His parents support Nathan, saying they told him "if there's nobody else around, you do what you have to do."

Obama Has Now Increased Debt More than All Presidents from George Washington Through George H.W. Bush Combined
By Terence P. Jeffrey, CNSNews.com
October 5, 2011

(CNSNews.com) - The Obama administration passed another fiscal milestone this week, according to new data released by the Treasury Department. As of the close of business on Oct. 3, the total national debt was $14,837,099,271,196.71—up about $44.8 billion from Sept. 30.
That means that in the less-than-three-years Obama has been in office, the federal debt has increased by $4.212 trillion--more than the total national debt of about $4.1672 trillion accumulated by all 41 U.S. presidents from George Washington through George H.W. Bush combined.

As senator, Obama missed votes on student loan bill he now wants to extend

By BYRON TAU | 4/23/12 6:38 PM EDT

In 2007, then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama missed two votes on the student loan interest bill that he now wants Congress to extend.
Obama twice skipped the Senate vote on the College Cost Reduction and Access Act when the bill came to the Senate floor first in July and again in September of 2007, according to public records.
The bill, introduced by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and signed into law by President George W. Bush, first cleared the Senate in July on a 78 to 18 vote, with Obama as one of only four senators to abstain. Obama did not cast a vote again in September, after the House and Senate had ironed out different versions of the bill. He was on the conference committee assigned to merge the House and Senate versions of the bill.
He issued a statement when the bill was signed by President Bush, saying, "by investing in education we are restoring America's competitiveness in the world, and today is an important step forward."
Obama has made keeping student loan interest rates low a new priority for his administration — but as a senator, he neither voted for Miller's bill nor signed on as a cosponsor.
A White House official on Monday insisted he was deeply involved in the legislation, voting on amendments and sitting on the conference committee. The White House also pointed out his vote was not needed for passage.
“President Obama was directly involved in crafting this legislation to provide American families a fair shot at an affordable college education when it first passed in 2007, and now he’s calling on Congress to prevent interest rates from doubling on July 1 for more than 7.4 million students who will rack up, on average, an additional $1,000 unless Congress acts,” White House spokesman Matt Lehrich said.
"The facts are very, very simple. This passed in 2007 with broad bipartisan support. It was signed by a Republican president," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan told reporters last week.
Obama is set to depart Tuesday on a three-state swing to put pressure on Congress to extend the 2007 law that lowered interest rates on Federal Family Education Loan and Direct Loan programs from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent. Those lower rates are set to expire in July — an outcome that the Obama administration estimated will cost the average loan holder more than $1,000 extra dollars if loan rates double — and will affect up to 7 million families.
Obama was embroiled in a tough primary campaign in 2007 and was on the road for big chunks of time. His missed vote rate in the Senate soared to over 80 percent towards the end of the campaign.

Grade-schoolers in trouble for wearing wounded warrior tees

CONVERSE, Texas - They thought it would be a harmless gesture to wear a t-shirt in support of their father who is a wounded warrior. But two elementary school girls got in trouble for it.
According to the Judson ISD spokesperson, the girls got in trouble for breaking the dress code before, but this time, their mom said, they were just supporting their father.
First grade student, Savannah and fourth grade student, Taylor, were raised in an Army family.
"I'm paralyzed. I have a TBI," said Army Spc. Justin Perez-Gorda.
The girls' father was injured by a road-side bomb in Afghanistan. The family moved to San Antonio not long after Perez-Gorda was injured in 2011.
"This organization may build us a home that is safe for my husband to be safe in," said Josie Perez-Gorda.
Last week, the family learned they could soon get help from a non-profit organization. They received t-shirts with their logo on Thursday, so on Friday the two girls wore the shirts to school in support of their father. They got in trouble with their principal at Masters Elementary.
"We do have a standardized dress code," said Judson ISD spokesperson, Aubrey Chancellor. "We certainly support the military, but we do have to be consistent across the board when it comes to following the dress code."
Mom and dad are upset and wondering why the school allows students to wear t-shirts with college logos but not one with an organization that supports wounded warriors like their father.
"These guys are fighting for our country and they should be able to wear something that honors their parents, especially if they are wounded," said the girls' mother.
The district spokesperson said if a parent feels the dress code needs to be changed they are always welcome to attend board meetings to address their concerns.

San Francisco Parks Trashed On Earth Day: Celebrations Are Not Very Eco-Friendly, Huge Messes Left Behind

By Sarah Medina

s-EARTH-DAY-SAN-FRANCISCO-large.jpg

San Francisco may be the greenest city in the nation, but some residents have a funny way of showing their appreciation.
On Earth Day, Marina district residents took their celebrations a little too far, leaving behind a Fort Mason disaster zone.
Our friends over at SFist alerted us to this heinous trashing:
Not to get all hippie-preachy or anything, but this is kind of an offensive amount of trash, right? Do normal and reasonable human beings not look at that mess and say, "...maybe we ought to like, I don't know? Take some of this trash with us? To a trash can?" or "Maybe we should bring that coffee table back home?" We've seen our share of litter-y days in Dolores Park and some embarrassing trash pileups in Golden Gate Park, but leaving actual pieces of living room furniture is a whole new level of prickish park use.
Fort Mason wasn’t the only park to take a hit on Earth Day. Mission residents also woke up to a severely less beautiful Dolores Park this morning.
One resident told Mission Local, “I’m not sure who angers me more, the people who came to enjoy the park on Saturday and left this mess or Rec and Park, which continues to ignore the complaints and warnings of neighbors about the park’s abuse.”
But SFist may have said it best:
"Enjoying scenic vistas around every corner is one of the nicest parts about living in San Francisco. And Fort Mason has one hell of a Bridge view, so why would you just throw a piece of garbage in front of that, you know?"
Thankfully, as of this morning, there have been some efforts to clean up the park. Click here or here to see pictures of Fort Mason and Dolores Park pre and post trash apocalypse, then go out and pick up a piece of trash in your local park.
