Thousands of people are waiting desperately for help

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IIMA -->Hundreds of people have been killed across south and east Asia in massive sea surges triggered by the strongest earthquake in the world for 40 years.

Villages have been swamped and homes destroyed after the 8.9-magnitude quake, the fifth strongest since 1900.

At least 500 died in Sri Lanka and a similar number were killed in India.

Casualty figures are rising and deaths have also been reported in Thailand and on Sumatra in Indonesia, thought to be near the tremor's epicentre.

Exact figures for casualties are hard to confirm but hundreds of people are also said to be missing in India's and Sri Lanka's coastal regions.

Sri Lanka's President Chandrika Kumaratunga has declared a national disaster, and the military has been deployed to help rescue efforts.

High sea waters have also struck tourist resorts on the coast of Thailand, reportedly killing at least 20 people.

The low-lying Indian Ocean islands of the Maldives have also been severely flooded but there is no word yet on casualties.

Communications down

Thousands have meanwhile been displaced from their homes by high tides in Indonesia.

Indonesia's geological position - along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - makes it prone to earthquakes and volcanoes.

Electricity and telephone networks in the area have stopped working, making it difficult to confirm the extent of the damage, the BBC's Rachel Harvey in Jakarta reports.

Ground shaking

Indonesia's worst-hit region appears to be Aceh, a strife-torn province on Sumatra's northernmost tip, which has seen heavy clashes between government soldiers and separatist rebels.

A witness interviewed by a local radio station reported seeing nine bodies in Banda Aceh, where part of the town's largest hotel is said to have collapsed.

"The ground was shaking for a long time," another witness told the radio station. In November, 29 people died when an earthquake struck Indonesia's eastern province of Papua. <!-- E BO -->

I am afraid we are going to see much more of this in the upcoming years ...

stay tuned if the "Super Volcano" errupts in Yellowstone .. the ground temps are running around 200 degrees and the animals have relocated ...

That thing blows and equal to 10,000 Hiroshima bombs going off at the same time

"the ground temps are running around 200 degrees and the animals have relocated"......

Hey man, the floors getting hot.......:hyper:

Reminds me of a friend of mine who worked at a steel mill....when he was a rookie he was doing some work and noticed that his shoes were a little greasy and he was sliding around some....

....turns out he was standing on some hot steel and the bottom of his shoes was melting......that little mistake sent him back down to the shoe store after his shift was over....

Macquarie penguins appear to have escaped the worst

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IIMA -->An earthquake on a remote Antarctic archipelago home to 850,000 King Penguins was the strongest on earth in four years, seismologists say.

The quake hit 400km (250 miles) off the Macquarie Islands on Friday, measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale.

Penguins appear to have escaped a major disaster as the quake occurred deep under the sea, far from inhabited land.

There were no tsunamis, or large tidal waves, because the quake moved horizontally rather than vertically.

The tremors were felt in Tasmania, 1000km (600 miles) away, but because the epicentre was 10km underground, few observers noticed the initial quake.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- E IBOX -->Buildings on the islands shook for 15 seconds, seismologist Cvetan Sinadinovski said.

"If this had happened underneath a population centre it would probably have destroyed a whole city," he said.

The quake was the biggest anywhere on earth since an 8.4-magnitude tremor off the coast of Peru in June 2001. That killed 74 people.

Friday's earthquake was caused by the collision of two of the major tectonic plates which make up the earth's crust layer, the Indo-Australian and the Pacific plates.

The last quake of a similar magnitude in the Macquarie region was in 1924, Mr Sinadinovski said. Despite its size, 22 staff of the Australian Antarctic Division slept through the tremors. "Nobody felt anything," a spokesman said.

Doc....I believe I saw that special on television....

Rest assured that if something major happens and Yellowstone blows up, that the government will double the monetary input and effort to rebuild Iraq, since yellowstone is actually inside the US and therefore not a concern of elected US officials.....

CBC News just said that over 13,000 are confirmed dead but thousands are still missing and millions have been left homeless. Jesus Christ. As though these poor people don't have enough enough **** to deal with.

I've also learned that Canada intends to donate 1 million dollars to the cause. That's a whopping 3.125 cents per person. Wtf is that??

So:

Agencies such as the Canadian Red Cross, UNICEF, World Vision and Oxfam are requesting cash donations.
For those wishing to make a financial donation to quake relief, you can contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111 or UNICEF Canada by phoning 1-877-955-3111.
For Americans:

Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the International Response Fund may be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org.

Both the BBC and CBC are claiming 40,000 now believed dead, and that number is expected to rise dramatically as searches for the missing cease. Indonesia alone expects their death toll to rise to 25,000.

Canada has pledged an additional 3 million (now $4M altogether) plus $500,000 in individual donations to the Red Cross alone thus far. The US gov't has pledged an initial $4M and will give up to $15M if needed.

Canada still owes the US $100M for the reconstruction of Iraq. Surely we can divert a good chunk of this purse to what is being called the worst natural disaster in human history?

The International Red Cross, Unicef, Oxfam and others (plus your local church charities) are taking monetary donations. At a time of year when we focus so heavily on consumer spending, surely each of us can dig a little and find fifty bucks to give to this cause? If you have a frivolous Xmas gift to return, ask the giver if they would understand if you donated the refund. Use part of your Xmas bonus. Whatever. Just help these poor people recover.

Although I agreewe are in forsome very interesting times ahead, doc...Those numbers mean nothing, unless we are still measuring earthquakes with the exact same technology as we didin the 70's.
