i think the iraqi civilian that was beating the picture of saddam, with his shoe, summed up the feeling of the iraqi population pretty well.

I have question, Saddam is gone and now what ? Do you guys really think a democracy can work over there without heavy military presence in the country to keep the peace ?

Remember this is a country devided into 3 ethnic groups that hate eachothers guts but they all want a piece of the Iraqi oil.

After Saddam is gone how long would you think the US troops will have to stay there to maintain the peace ?

Best uneducated guess would be between one and three years. It will not be easy but if it works well it will pay huge dividends for the US as well as the whole world. Not to mention the iraqi people.

WOW ! to the above post !

GIL,

That's a very big IF. This is the Arab community w're talking about. The Arab community already dispises the US for standing by Israel no matter what and leave the Palistinians out in the cold.

Most Arab countries will see this as an American attempt to control the Arab region. This will have setbacks for a long time to come IMO

his name is fred. he is angry at the world. been banned about a thousand times.

hungover,

lets face it, democracy works. it may take a couple years, but people will learn to work together if it means more money in their pockets, and a better life for their country, and their people.

RPM,

Democracy will not work if you have a devided country all looking to take control of it !

The only way these people can live with eachother is by killing one another ! Saddam as cruel as he is, is the best thing that ever happened to Iraq ask past US presidents that helped him take controll of Iraq.

If america shows moderate arab countries that they will protect the iraqi interest i.e. the oil. Then they will be all for it, they all know an armed Saddam is a dangerous Saddam. I think there will be strong influence from many arab countries in this process. As far as the three groups inside iraq it is not hopeless look at the US, it could take time though.

that's what I'm saying GIL, it will take a lot longer the anyone expect IMO !

Ad there will be more casualties after war is over also !

I'm not sure if the American public is aware that their sonds & daughters will have to stay over there for probably a decade to come to maintain the peace whil democracy is being set up !
