Castaway: I disagree. Some books open with a business that can only suceed with the pretense of robbing their customers, such as Pan-am, and Blue Marlin.

Even with a few million in capital, a start-up needs volume to make the vig cover expenses. Why play at the new book ?

Bet Jamaica succeeded, but it's run by well established Olympic. Likely way more than 3 million behind that.

I see far fewer books in the future, not more.

Opening a book should become more like competing with Wal-mart, than opening a gas station/ convenience store when there isn't another one for 10 miles, IMO.

The small-timer should limit himself to being an illegal local bookie.

I'd go as far as saying you need tens of millions, or more to take on the big books ! That's where the future is going. Consolidation, way too many books now.

castaway......i am not going to argue that the majority of offshore books fail, because of a short bankroll......

you say book squares???

of course....sia, bodog and others have made a good example of how to be successfull at that.....

but when was the last time a book opened up saying "we want nothing but sharps"??

the last three or four years has seen books open up with the main focus on "recreational" bettors.....only to fail quickly...(underfunding plays the biggest role...probably)....

but other factors.....imo....the player base....you say spend a couple of mill on advertising....do you think saturating the market with ads will bring in a fresh crop of squares.....imo...no....sharps maybe

you know as well as i do....the squares of ten, fifteen years ago dont exist......alot harder to make a dollar now days....

unless your starting your offshore book with an existing player base.........your work is cut out for you......

this industy is based on money....pure greed if you want to know the truth.......

i pity the poor souls, who would have investors throw in 3 or 4 million...and advertise as a square players dream....i am sure they would have no problem whatsoever attracting clients...squares and sharps....but kicking sharps out after they kick your teeth in...hasnt ever been a good solution....."we lost a large percent to wise-guys and sharps" is the common answer given by a book gone belly-up....

tough proposition...imo
