If the other player is 10 feet away from covering the shot, a BH down the line does not require a 500 mph BH whipping for a winner. Often times Fed will simply "defend" these points down the line for a smooth winner. Mayer with an open court and tries to rocket a 10,000 mph BH down the line for a pointless winner.... and misses.
Then add in the points wasted on 2nd serve return points that he doesn't care to put in play... and is already making the task beating a superior player even harder.
