just some more info on why the nhl should just close shop.

the combined ratings from there game 1's on versus got a .38 rating. .38, that's not even 300,000 people.

Most hockey markets watch the local feeds instead. Why would a Blackhawk fan watch the Versus feed, game shown in progress, when I can watch it on Comcast Chicago?

More numbers to support me -

Comcast SportsNet Press Release
Apr 17, 2009, 2:29 PM EDT

Comcast SportsNet, the television home for the most games and most comprehensive coverage of Chicago Blackhawks NHL Playoffs coverage in HD, delivered its highest Blackhawks ratings ever last evening (April 16) -- a 4.45 household rating for its live coverage of the Blackhawks first round home ice battle against the Calgary Flames.

In this thrilling overtime playoff victory by the Blackhawks, Comcast SportsNet attracted approx. 155,400 households for the entire game and scored a 5.9 peak rating during the 9:45 PM quarter-hour (over 206,000 households). The 4.45 single game ratings record on Comcast SportsNet is the regional sports network’s highest Blackhawks game rating to date and it is also the highest Blackhawks “playoff” game rating in 15 years (previously held on April 26, 1994 when the Blackhawks faced the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of a first round series on SportsChannel). Source for all ratings information is provided by Nielsen Media Research.

Comcast SportsNet was also the #1-highest rated television network in the Chicago market last night for the key advertising demo of Adults 25-54 during the game time period of 9:00-10:30 PM. In addition, Comcast SportsNet was #1 overall in the market for Men 18-34, Men 18-49 & Men 25-54 for the entire length of the game (7:30-10:30 PM).

During the 9:00 PM quarter-hour when Comcast SportsNet was carrying the Blackhawks and Comcast SportsNet “Plus” (CSN+/CLTV) was airing the White Sox game, the network posted a combined 10.0 household rating on both networks (approx. 350,000 households). In addition, the combined ratings totals for yesterday’s Blackhawks (4.45), White Sox (2.85) and Cubs (3.97) game telecasts on Comcast SportsNet scored an 11.3 household “cume” rating (approx. 400,000 households tuning in for Comcast SportsNet’s tripleheader)

of course local ratings will be higher. national rating is a great indicator of how many people are watching the other games, and when you cant get 300,000 people nationally watching a game, then you deserve to be behind the Senior PGA tour, which they currently are and most likely will continue to be.

Hockey is a regional sport, basketball isn't. I don't care that no one south of Indiana doesn't watch the NHL.

Some people don't get it, you being one. The major networks don't know how to promote it. Who wants to watch it on a Saturday afternoon in April when the weather is breaking in the North? That is the Canadian fans biggest complaint, and I agree.

thats why the NHL should eliminate 30 games and at least 10 teams. get it on a olympic sized rink to and shrink the size of goaltender equipment.

It should downsize to 24 teams. Knock the schedule back to 72 games. Goalie equipment, they did downsize. Screw the Olympic-size rink. The majority of the best players are here already.

olympic size rink gives you more open ended action. dont have players all cluttered together.

thats one of the things i want changed with the nba. want a slightly wider court. the court has always been the same width, but the players are getting bigger and bigger.

widen it out, get more fluidity, openness.

The one rule I would like the NBA to consider is the olympic free-throw lane.

Are you kidding? For someone who hates MLB like I do, the basketball and hockey playoffs are something I cling to until it's time for college football again. I'm gonna watch every game like a couch potato. But to give me some variety, I've got the little wireless A/V widget so I can take the plasma out into the orchard and watch some hoops under a nice shady tree. Gotta love the California lifestyle!
