i have not maxed in a good while but i should still be able to get 315lbs.. 3 (45lb) plates on both sides.. used to rep this 5 times.. but those were the old days and that was at a bodyweight of 200 lbs, now i can get it once at a weight of 235lbs..

makes me sick to think about this at times.. im 38 but dont feel any different than at 21, just about 35lbs to fat...

really going to try and weigh 217lbs by thanksgiving and bench 250lbs for 10 reps.. and possibly 315lbs for 3 reps..

Yes I "could" and for repetitions..Most ever was 350X5 weighing about 205 ...Which equals 408 (1 time) according to the bench chart...I never tried a one rep with that kind of weight...

I no longer lift that heavy though, not even close, I never use more than 275 lbs...

I had a very bad shoulder injury 4 years ago and I cannot afford to re-injure it...it actually came out while I was benching a year or so after I thought it healed, so I gave up real heavy benching.....it's a good thing though, I no longer have soreshoulders and wrists from the real heavy poundages.

Like SSI ,I also feel as good as ever, I weigh like 208-210 lbs at 5-10

Once in a while I think about going after my top bench again, even though I know its not worth the risk of another shoulder injury.

Personally, I don't think that bench press chart is correct...

I doubt 350x5 reps =408lbs...I would estimate 385 personally...

I got strong by doing 5 reps sets on the bench for years and years, always did 5 reps...

Journey and SSI, you guys are monsters. I tried when I was younger to "get big". It would never happen for me! I did bench 305 once. Right now I can do 225 about 6-8 times. I guess that figures to about 275.

Coach, thats not bad 225 X 6-8..

Jman, im 6 foot even and 235lbs.. but thats too heavy.. i always say that im going to compete in some master events at age 40 and do some bodybuilding again -- at a weight of under 200lbs.... right now and for this winter, id settle for a weight of 217lbs.. i can weigh 217lbs and still look good, in those tight tshirts.. 2 reasons, i own a convenience store and enjoy seeing the young kids eyes when i wear those tight shirts and flex a little.. also i have a 14yr old daughter and no young punk is going to come over built better than me or outbenching me.. ha ha but im serious..

i usually workout alot harder in the winter, this summer heat takes a toll.. so far Journey, my only injury is a shoulder also, it hurts if i do "incline barbell presses" so i compensate by doing the dumbells.. hardest part is getting them to the starting posistion..

SSI,

I know exactly what you mean. Getting that first rep/starting postion in dumbell shoulder or incline presses can be a bitch. Have you seen an adjustable rack for this ever? I would think one would have been made, I would love an adjustable rack on both sides of an adjustable bench to allow the dumbells to start out towards the top of the movement. Maybe I should put some time into getting a product like that invented as getting 70+lbs. dumbells started in the movement is very painful on my joints. I would have to guess many injuries are caused by the jerk of the dumbells into starting position.

Coach,

Sounds like we have almost identical strength levels and body weight, you kick my ass on the running and aerobic stuff though.

I know what you mean about the dumbells and getting them into position as well...I have basically worked out by myself at home my entire career, its very difficult getting the dumbells into position safely!

Journeyman,

So have you ever seen or heard of a rack that would work for this? Maybe one hasn't been invented or marketed yet?

I have never seen one no...it would be hard to do , because the dumbells fit so closely in your hands...

Jman, what i do is pick one up with both hands and have my buddy hand me the other one (in the starting posistion)... jerking those things up (which i still do occasionally) could injure you..

I can still rep out 315 for like 7. I don't really max out but when I played college ball I did it 12 times as a strong safety and I was 210.

how many reps we talkin'?
I can still do it a few times but as I get closer to pushing my late 30's, the more I realize I should spend more time doing cardio ........ with my limited time I have to train in the gym these days, I find I'm better suited to working core movements and putting LESS stress on my shoulders .....
still amazes me to see the guys in the 40-50+ age group throwing up 315 like it's a warm up set .... I just wonder how their bodies can take it without any extra "supplements" if you know what I mean

by the way, the bench press is probably one of THE weakest tests to gauge true athletic ability .... I'm a living testament to that! LOL

I probably still could. I don't max out now, but try to do some heavy lifting. I had a shoulder injury as well. Played LB in college (North Texas). I just try to stay in shape these days, but have to workout 4-5 times a week or I feel loose/ weak or something. I run 2-3 miles 4-5 times a week and have stayed about the same since playing. Playing weight was around 230 (6'2") .....about 218-225 now.
