If he doesn't, he didn't get the needed delegates, and it's a new ballgame, and it's then in the hands of the delegates, who are the party regulars, even those pledged to Drumpf on the 1st ballot.

The only way Drumpf gets the nomination in a brokered/open/contested convention is if Cruz drops out and releases his delegates to Drumpf. He may do that because he hates the establishment. But barring that, Drumpf is pretty much toast if he doesn't get 1237.
