What's his connection or what do you like about him. That's not really a big name guy.

He grew up in Oklahoma and was the Sooners QB back in 1996-97. He beat Texas the year he started. I think he would be welcomed with open arms if hired. I like the way he's built Memphis program. He meets the qualifications. He was also TCU's OC under Patterson before becoming HC. He developed Andy Dalton into a good QB. Very solid coach imo...

Ditto. He's a no nonsense guy. Solid XO guy. He's got big program written all over him. if Memphis has another solid year, I can see him getting a serious look by a power 5 conference school. He's got a real solid pedigree

I hope Oklahoma fires him because I would love to see him reunite with Spurrier at South Carolina! But really, who would they hire? Gotta consider who's available before firing him.

I here Mike smith's available bahaha

not sure they would go the coordinator route but that Venables guy is impressive as hell. took a team that allowed 30 ppg & gave up 70 to wvu in a bowl and are now top 5 defense in ncaaf

obviously has OU ties

I started in early on about the coaching situation at OU. Mike Stoops and Huepel need to go but I think that the bowl showed that even the players have lost faith in their coaches. Mike Stoops is the DC and also the DB coach. Bob _ _ oops is loyal to a fault to his coaches. What is funny is they more or less ran off Venables so Mike could run the show. Venables must must have laughed himself to sleep last night. I think it is time to clean house including Bob but I don't see it happening. Fuentes is the logical first choice to replace him. Morale could not be lower than now in Norman and recruiting will suffer big time.

The bottom line is this. The Big 12 so far, has played like crap. Just look at what happened yesterday. Three teams who were never really in their games. West Virginia hung around for a half and then got a late score to make it look reasonable. Both OU and Texas got the caca kicked out of them. The Big 12 is now the ONLY Power 5 Conference to be shut out in the Bowl Games so far. The Big 12 is making the Selection Commitee look good by ducking Baylor and TCU. Obviously they had very little in the way of competition in the conference besides themselves and possibly Kansas State. A lot of this has to do with coaching, or the lack of it.

We all know about Stoops, though to be fair, he is 4-2 in his last 6 Bowl Games. So much for you know-it-alls who quote records with no clue as th what they actually are. His problem is that it has been 6 years since he has had a competitive team. People are getting tired of him, but like the rest of the gutless Big 12, OU will not make a move to can him as long as his teams continue to win and go to bowl games. Stoops has been there too long for OU to fire him. Whether or not they can convince him to retire (i.e. MONEY) or not is another matter.

Dana Holgorsen does not know what the word "Defense" means. Yesterday's fiasco was the 7th time that his team had given up 31 points or more for the season. His teams have never given up 31 points or less less than 6 times in a season since he has been the head coach. That is NOT a record that is going to challenge for any Big 12 titles. It is time for him to go.

I never liked the Charlie Strong hire and was very vocal in saying so. This season he make a lot of changes and had to do things his way. "His way" led to a miserable 6-7 record, the first losing season since 2010, and only the second losing season since 1992. He will not make it in the Big 12 because he does not have what it takes to recruit the best players in Texas. A&M is well ahead of him now, and Baylor is quickly closing the gap. Teams outside Texas like OU are also ahead of him in the recruiting wars.

Having said all of this, I still think that Baylor and TCU have very good chances of winning their games. Both teams feel like they deserve to be in the Playoffs, even though we now know that the do not. TCU played a bunch of nobodies and lost to Baylor. Baylor played a worse schedule and lost to West Virginia, the same West Virginia that got beat by Texas A&M. Still, these teams think that they are among the best in the nation, and now must really prove it on the field. Kansas State plays UCLA in a game that I have no clue about. Either team can win that one. I expect Washington to handle Okie State. Bottom line is that at best, the Big 12 can go 4-3 in the bowl season. They can also be shut out. If you think that the results of this bowl season will not have an imact on next season, guess again.

Nepotism is a big problem at OU with both of their coordinators. Once you make that decision it's pretty much an all for one, one for all situation where nobody goes or everybody goes. Something tells me Stoops gets rid of 2 or 3 assistants in the offseason, but doesn't fire the one's he should. We fondly refer to Josh Huepel now as Josh Boren...

Josh Heupel gets extension, raise from OU

Oklahoma has some faith in co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel. Per the Tulsa World, Heupel received the stamp of approval for an extension and raise from OU’s regents on Wednesday.
Heupel’s new contract with the Sooners will go for three years at $550,000 annually, a $200,000 raise. When you compare that to all other OU assistants with the exception of defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, that’s a pretty big deal. Other than Stoops, no other assistant previously had a contract for more than a year and Heupel’s new salary makes him the second-highest paid assistant behind Stoops ($600,000).
The Sooners’ other co-offensive coordinator, Jay Norvell, was also approved for a raise to $400,000 annually, but his contract is still for one year.
Heupel’s been the co-OC for OU since 2011. Over the past two seasons, the Sooners have ranked among the best passing offenses in the country. He’s also had the benefit of working with Landry Jones and Sam Bradford for much of his time at OU dating back to his days as the team’s QB coach. 2013 doesn’t project to be as easy with Jones’ departure, so the decision to reward Heupel comes at an interesting time.
In three years, OU should find out if that reward was warranted.

Look at the date Russ. That article was from last year. I think OU would happily pay off that extension to save Stoops job. I've been hearing a lot of rumors that Huepel and Norvell are out. Please baby Lord Jesus let this rumor be true....

When co-ordinators start getting changed out every 2-4 years you know that it's time for the main coach to go. Mack's downfall (aside from the absolutely horrendous way he handled the QB recruiting position) was his hiring of Manny Diaz and letting Greg Davis go. As you OU fans know now, Venables wasn't actually the issue. He showed that in spades yesterday.

Being good at football for an extended period is hard. Damned hard. It's all cyclical. Just wait until Alabama has to replace Saban. My guess is Michigan, Tennessee, Arkansas and some other older perennial powers are going to start being good again. It's what makes college football so great. Last thing re; OU; when OU can't recruit Texas anymore, you know it's time for a change. OU's dynasties always have and will be framed around blue chippers from Texas; Dallas in particular. They need to find a way to get back into Texas. I hope that's not soon though.

OU is actually having a pretty decent recruiting year so far. Better than I expected. But like Texas, they aren't up to what they used to be in being top 10 recruiting programs. I've been saying it here for the last couple of years, the Big 12 is getting a little worse each year and slowly sinking into obscurity. They can't get it done with 10 teams. Especially when 5 of those teams are on the same level as a mid-major. Too many no-name teams with 50,000 seat stadiums and not enough bling left in this conference.
