BASEHEAD: It is one thing to compare a war like WWII, that was fought out of self defense, with clear strategies against a uniformed army that will eventually quit once their infrastructure is completely bombed out. Fighting in WWII was against countries, and winnable. If you drop enough bombs on a country whoever's left will come out with a white flag. (Nam was winnable if the bombing campaign of operation rolling thunder would have come out brutal and decisive against North Vietnam. Instead they gave them love taps and decided to fight it out in the jungles. Should have been a non-issue anyway because our govt had no right to commit American tax dollars and it's youth to a foreign civil war.)

Compare that to driving around the streets of Baghdad fighting a guerilla war against a non-uniformed army that has no generals to tell them to give up their guns, people who blend in with the common public and shoot when your back is turned.

When you compare costs you have to consider the money involved against the realistic outcome. Bush Sr warned of the lunacy in invading Iraq with ground forces and trying to establish democracy, a point his generals came to agree with and something that totally went over the head of Dubya.

Compare costs with all the other wars you want, but given that these wars cannot be won coupled with the massive outlay of cash, there's no way a reasonable person can justify the cost.
